  Belmondâs Luick Memorial Swimming Pool will open a week later than usual this year. Opening day is planned for Friday, June 4. ââCity Manager Darrel Steven Carlyle told the city council Monday night, âBecause of new rules during Covid-19, all our lifeguards have to be recertified. We are having to bring someone here in early June to take care of that this year.â ââThe council approved the hiring of 13 returning lifeguards, seven new lifeguards, and five front desk workers. Pay will range from $7.00 to $8.70 per hour depending upon years of experience, training, and leadership responsibilities. ââWhen the pool does open, the water should be nice and warm.   The north end of 4th Avenue NE, which many local folks call âthe dump roadâ was officially closed to traffic Monday night by the Belmond City Council. âââThereâs too much traffic thatâs trying to avoid the official Highway 69 bridge detour,â said Public Works Director Justin Fournier. âLots of vehicles using 4th Avenue NE shouldnât be.â ââThe north end of the street is gravel, and the heavy truck traffic is beating it up. âââMy officers have stopped several trucks that have turned off the official detour on 5th Street SE and driven up 4th Avenue,â said Police Chief Rick McDaniel. âTheir GPS devices are telling them to use 4th Avenue.
