Power cos.: Extreme cold forces rolling blackouts to non-critical facilities

Midwest Energy officials on Tuesday morning said the power provider has begun to interrupt service to save power.
As ordered by SPP, Midwest Energy has begin mandatory interruptions of service to non-critical facilities on a rotational basis, with each rotation lasting no more than two hours, said a statement from the company. Many of these interruptions would involve non-critical facilities, including oil field service and commercial loads, though some rural residential customers could also be affected. These circuits include: Oil field load in Ellis, Russell, Barton and Ness County, and various commercial loads (these have been coordinated directly with the affected businesses). ....

Extreme record-breaking cold continued its grip on Ellis County Sunday and Monday, as part of a storm blanketing the Midwest.
Topping that off, snowfall from Saturday night and overnight to Sunday morning brought 2.5 inches of snow to Hays, according to the K-State Ag Research Center at Hays.
Gov. Laura Kelly on Sunday issued a statewide state of disaster emergency due to wind chill warnings and stress on utility and natural gas providers.
The temperature Monday in Hays by 11 a.m. had reached only minus 6 degrees, with a feels like temperature of minus 22. Tuesday s forecast is for warming, with a high of 14 degrees and a low of zero. Not until Wednesday are temperatures expected to climb into the low 20s. ....

K-State Research and Extension will host the 18th annual Cover Your Acres Winter Conference for crop producers and consultants from 1 to 5 p.m. (CST) on Tuesday, Jan. 19 in an online format.
Cover Your Acres is a producer-driven meeting focused on new ideas and research-based updates in crop production in northwest Kansas and the central High Plains region.
The conference, which typically draws more than 400 attendees from Kansas and other states, highlights the latest technology, methods, and conservation practices to improve crop production in the region.
