Kauai volunteers on March 16 spotted the 8-month-old seal with about 30 feet of fishing line trailing from his mouth.
Endangered Hawaiian monk seal RS10 is home on Kauaʻi thanks to community volunteers and joint agency efforts. The seal ingested a fishing hook and was treated at The Marine Mammal Center’s monk seal hospital on Hawaiʻi Island. After a successful hook-removal, RS10 was recently released back to the wild.
Researchers have documented at least 170 endangered Hawaiian monk seal pups that were born in 2023 at Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.
Along with counting the new pups, NOAA also intervened on 27 monk seals to improve their survival.
A Hawaiian monk seal was returned to its home in Kaua‘i waters after five months of treatment at the Kona mammal hospital for kidney stones, possible pneumonia and a fractured canine tooth that had become infected.
