He grew up in Cameron and graduated from Cameron Yoe High School. He attended Texas A&M University and was a member of the Corps of Cadets, played on the Texas A&M Baseball team, and majored in Architecture. While squaring to bunt during a baseball game, an inside pitch broke his finger.
