BENGALURU: As the controversy surrounding Zomato’s delivery partner and a Bengaluru-based beauty influencer deepens, the spotlight is back on the status of 15 million gig workers in India who, until last year, lacked formal regulatory support.
Legal experts told TNIE that even as the country formally introduced the Social Security Code 2020 to provide benefits such as life insurance, accident covers, gratuity and provident fund contributions, the classification of these contract workers as employees, as well as the allocation of minimum wages, continues to remain a grey area.
In a recent report, ASSOCHAM had suggested that gig workers should be entitled to potable benefits.

Food delivery platform Zomato is once again in the news for the past few days, and this time too for all the wrong reasons. This time a Zomato delivery executive has been accused of physical violence by a customer last week in Bengaluru.
The woman named Hitesha Chandranee, and the delivery man named Kamaraj have come out with their sides of the story - not to mention both stories opposite of each other.
While the woman accuses the delivery executive of hitting her, the man says he was hit with a slipper by her and she hurled abuses at him and tried to punch him when she accidentally hurt herself.

BENGALURU: Police on Monday booked a case against a software engineer and beauty influencer for allegedly assaulting a Zomato delivery executive when he had gone to deliver food to her flat in Bengaluru’s Electronic City last week.
The police action against Hitesha Chandranee, 31, followed a counter-complaint by delivery executive Kamaraj. Sources said police have booked Hitesha under Indian Penal Code sections for wrongful restraint, assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour person and criminal intimidation.

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], March 13 (ANI): The Zomato food delivery executive, who is accused of assaulting a woman customer, has rejected the allegations levelled against him, saying "let the truth win".
Recently, a Bengaluru woman named Hitesha Chandranee accused a Zomato delivery executive of assaulting her which left her nose bleeding.
"She refused to pay after accepting the order as I was late for the delivery and asked it for free," Kamaraj, the accused, told ANI.
"She started hitting me with slippers and at some point in time while safeguarding myself, my left hand touched her right hand and the ring which she worn hit her nose and it started bleeding.
