Last Thursday Wayne County responded to the scene of an accident on Highway 45 near 2950E. 51-year-old Monte Bradham of Fairfield was traveling on Hwy 45 when he slowed/stopped for a deer in the roadway. At the same time 23-year-old Kensey Smothers of Fairfield was also traveling Hwy 45. Smothers failed to stop in time, hitting the rear of Bradham's car. There were no injuries reported at the scene. Christmas Eve at approximately 3:10 p.m. Wayne County responded to the scene of an accident on Highway 45. 52-year-old Marieangele Linder of Fairfield was traveling north on Hwy 45 South near Barnhill when she left the roadway and struck a ditch. The vehicle sustained over $1500 in damages and was towed from the scene. 40-year-old Fairfield resident Wesley A Cone pleaded guilty in Wayne Co court recently on a charge of Possession of Less than 5 Grams Methamphetamine, a Class 3 Felony charge. He was sentenced to 18-months of probation, credited with 5 days served, and ordered to pay $3,512 in fines and court costs. 35 year old Merian Ishell of Fairfield, recently pleaded guilty in Wayne County court to a charge of Possession of Firearm by a Felon. Ishell was sentenced to 18-months of probation, given credit for 1 day served, and ordered to pay a total of $1,649 in fines and costs. Police across southern Illinois are investigating a series of drive-by shootings. The incidents happened across several towns in Williamson County early Saturday morning. Investigators suspect the same person or group of people are responsible. No injuries were reported, but several properties were damaged in the shootings. Investigators with the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis are looking for the person or persons responsible for killing a 17-year-old in the overnight hours between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Captain Brian Koberna, chief deputy commander of the Major Case Squad, said LaShawn Bell was found shot to death at 12:05 a.m. Sunday on Fall Street, between Williams St. and Richard Drive. Bell's body was found out in the cold, Koberna said. The Major Case Squad claims to have several leads in the search for Bell's killer, however, they're still welcoming public assistance Illinois' population appears to be down for a ninth year in a row. New estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the state lost more than 104-thousand residents this year as compared to last year. Illinois has just over 12-point-five-million residents. Illinois was one of only 18 states that lost population this year. Illinois State Police is investigating a deadly stabbing over the weekend at a home in Christopher, Illinois. The incident happened on Christmas Day in the 200 block of West 15th Street. Police were called to the home for a domestic dispute and Jeffery Brown was found stabbed inside. Brown died at the hospital. Illinois State Senator Melinda Bush is leaving office. The Illinois State Senate Democrats announced that the Grayslake Democrat is resigning effective Saturday. The vacancy must be filled within 30 days and must be a Democrat. Bush's replacement will serve for the remainder of her term. A search continues for a woman who went missing last week in Atwood, Illinois. Police say Karen Fennessy was last seen Thursday leaving her home in the 200 block of North Kansas Street. First responders searched for Fennessy the next day but didn't locate her. Anyone with information is asked to call Atwood Police or their local law enforcement. Illinois' Smoke Detector Act will be updated with the start of the new year. Beginning January 1st, the measure will require Illinois homeowners to replace their old smoke detectors with new alarms that use a 10-year sealed battery. Homeowners who don't replace their old alarms with a new model will have 90 days to make the change, or face a fine. Family and friends are mourning the passing of a three-year-old girl from Auburn, Illinois. June Dallas' family posted on Facebook that she passed away last Thursday in her mother and father's arms. She had been battling Stage 4 neuroblastoma. The city of Auburn held a parade in her honor earlier this month.
