By Kat Webb & The Herald Journal • Mar 1, 2021 Cache County Council’s decision whether to allow wineries has been delayed once again with growing concerns of cultural shift, but little evidence has been found of negative consequences in other counties. “I look at this as a cultural change to this valley,” said Council Member Dave Erickson. “Is Cache Valley ready for this cultural change? … And maybe we are. We’ve talked about the economy changes, about inviting outside people that come here for events and things like that, that we need to open up our culture a little bit more.” This tapping of the brakes comes on the heels of the council’s last meeting, where concerns were raised that increased access to alcohol through wineries and tastings could lead to an increase in alcohol abuse and related issues. ....
By Kat Webb & The Herald Journal • Feb 22, 2021 Nearly every year, Utah lawmakers seek to change how educators approach sexual education in public schools. The newest proposed legislation on the topic, House Bill 177, would require the topics of “consent, including what does not constitute consent; sexual violence behavior prevention; and sexual assault resource strategies,” according to the bill’s text. Lawmakers previously voted down the bill before a substitute version passed a committee in the house on Wednesday, though one vote determined the move.
“We support the concept of teaching these skills to (students),” said Jill Anderson, the executive director for Citizens Against Physical and Sexual Abuse. “It’s important for them to learn and understand these skills in life.” ....

By Kat Webb & The Herald Journal • Feb 11, 2021 A committee looking into the subject has recommended that Logan could help its residents feel better represented on the Municipal Council by implementing voting districts, but for most current council members, the report raised more questions than it answered. “I just think I think equitable representation is a goal that we should strive for,” said Keegan Garrity, a neighborhood council representative on the Voting District Committee.
While the council did not immediately accept the recommendation of the committee at its most recent meeting, the discussion is ongoing. ....
