Newly-minted Greater Hartford Arts Council CEO the Rev. Shelley Best said she believes the arts industry must be transformed to better represent the region’s rich diversity. That would attract new artists, tap into a new customer base and let those who might have been looking in from the outside feel they too can be part of Greater Hartford’s thriving arts scene.
The Greater Hartford Arts Council will have new leadership this spring following the board’s announcement that Rev. Shelley D. Best is taking over as CEO in April. The Greater Hartford Arts Council announced Tuesday that Best will be the organization’s new CEO beginning April 18. She’ll take over for interim CEO Kate McOmber, who has been serving in that capacity since September 2020. McOmber will assume the role of chief operating officer when Best moves to CEO.

The Greater Hartford Arts Council today launched its formal search for its next CEO. The organization, which supports and promotes the arts in the Greater Hartford area, formed a search committee staffed by members of the art council’s board of directors. The organization hasn’t had a permanent CEO since Cathy Malloy, the wife of former Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, left the position in 2020 after nine years on the job.
