Doodling on a yellow legal pad in 1969, Bruce Kirby designed one of the most beloved sailboats in history, a low-slung fiberglass dinghy that became known as the Laser.
Light enough to be fastened to the roof of a car, stable and speedy enough to be used by weekend hobbyists as well as Olympic racers, the boat became a fixture of international competitions and local yacht clubs.

Doodling on a yellow legal pad in 1969, Bruce Kirby designed one of the most beloved sailboats in history, a low-slung fiberglass dinghy that became known as the Laser.
Light enough to be fastened to the roof of a car, stable and speedy enough to be used by weekend hobbyists as well as Olympic racers, the boat became a fixture of international competitions and local yacht clubs.
Its popularity established Kirby as one of the world's preeminent sailboat designers and enabled him to quit his day job as editor of a yachting magazine to practice design full-time. He had no formal training but went on to create such influential sailboats as the San Juan 24 and the Sonar, a 23-foot keelboat now used in Paralympic competitions.

Denise Oscroft saw her husband Steven die right next to her - when a lump of concrete fell from a lorry, smashed through their car windscreen and struck his head. Nobody has ever been prosecuted for his death. Now Denise wants to prevent other people being killed or injured in the same way.
"They haven't only took Steve's life away; they've took my life away as well."
Steven and Denise Oscroft had been married for almost 37 years when he was killed on what should have been a happy family day out.

Ridgefield Theater Barn Celebrates Return of Live Performances with An Evening of One Acts

The Ridgefield Theater Barn is ready to celebrate the return of live performing arts in front of audiences with "An Evening of One-Acts" beginning June 11.
The Barn, set up with cabaret-style seating, will start its 2021 season, featuring local, national and international unpublished playwrights' scripts. They closed in early March 2020 due to the pandemic, "The community is ready for live entertainment, and we are excited to be able to back on stage in the Barn doing what we love to do. Our talented, dedicated performers and crew are ready for the curtain to rise once again and connect with the audience," said Ridgefield Theater Barn Executive Director Pamme Jones.

A “doting” grandfather was taking his grandchildren out for the first time after lockdown when he was killed by a rock which smashed through his car windscreen, an inquest heard.
Steven Oscroft, 60, was on a day out strawberry picking with his wife and their two grandchildren when a chunk of masonry from a builder's truck hit his Hyundai IX35 car.
