Lewallens find support in Hingham community while son fights illness

HINGHAM Shae and Ken Lewallen had a difficult decision to make when they learned their unborn son had Vein of Galen Malformation, a rare blood vessel abnormality often called VOGM.
They could either stay at the hospital where they were receiving treatment in North Carolina, which had little familiarity with the disease, or they could travel away from family and friends to Boston Children s Hospital to see a doctor who specializes in the disorder.
For Shae, it was an easy decision.
I kept telling my husband, Duke is the best hospital here in North Carolina, but I just have a feeling we need to take him somewhere else, and that s when my interest in Boston started becoming piqued, Shae said. ....
