Angola Police and Fire Departments seek more staff

Whitmire approached the committee asking to add two more officers for next year’s budget.
“Our third shift has increased dramatically,” said Whitmire. “Almost 200% increase in calls of service.”
The Angola Police Department currently employs 18 officers, but Whitmire said that the city should have closer to 21 officers based on Federal Bureau of Investigation and International City/County Management Association assessments.
While the committee agreed that the city would benefit from two new officers, member Dave Martin raised the point that the city may not be able to afford hiring them both at once.
“I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth,” Whitmire said. “If you guys tell me that we can only fund one, then that’s exactly what we’re going to work with. One is going to help us out tremendously. Two would be the absolute best case scenario.”

Angola Police announces new candidate for K-9 unit

ANGOLA — Angola Police Chief Ken Whitmire announced last week that the department has selected a new candidate for its K-9 unit, Officer Max Essman.
The Angola police department has expressed interest in a new canine officer for the past few weeks and is excited by the prospect of a new furry recruit.
“We very much look forward to having another canine,” said Whitmire. “That would give us one on each shift and broaden our abilities a bit more.”
The department currently has two canine officers. Zara began in May 2019 with her handler Officer Brian Knoll, and Diego joined soon after in June 2020 with Officer John Burris.

Angola's snow ordinance in effect

ANGOLA — The Angola Police Department has enacted the city’s snow ordinance.
“The city encourages public cooperation so that safe and clear routes can be maintained during the winter season,” Police Chief Ken Whitmire said.
The ordinance requires vehicles to be moved from public parking places every 24 hours in order to allow for snow removal.
Vehicles not moved will be red tagged. Vehicles that have been red tagged and have not been moved another 24 hours can be towed at the owner’s expense.
This kicks into effect anytime there’s at least 4 inches of snow. Angola officially received 4.6 inches of snow between Saturday’s and Sunday’s snowfall, said data recorded by Tim Tyler, cooperative weather observer for Angola. The bulk of the snow came overnight Saturday at 4.1 inches.
