Upon Further Review 2023: Defense vs Washington

FORMATION NOTES: The UFR Glossary is here and you may want to brush up because DeBoer made me bring out rare formations like a true under-center Single-Wing, and weird notations like Z->Y means the WR and TE have switches spots. This is the Go Go setup (aka Single-Wing RB) that UNLV was running way back in September. I put covered players in parentheses, but Washington also managed to get away with some illegal formations where nobody was covered, in which case I just put a question mark in there, e.g. Go Go Right (?). "Hide H" was a trick where Rome Odunze hid out at tight end and got M to align in a mismatch. That's him trying not to be noticed as the H-back on the top of the formation (where all the Michigan players are pointing). I'm using "Flex" for a TE split out wide for a 2x2 set. "Demi" means the TE isn't tight but neither is he in the slot (see #37 on the left). Also we were treated to a skycam version of this game, so I can provide a few canonical examples of terms we're often flinging around, and some new ones. Michigan in the above is in an G front, which means the nose is head up over the guard. Sometimes he was over the tackle, which I call Wide, where the DT is lined up over a tackle. Letters or numbers (A, AA, 0) in the defensive front that means they've added LBs on the line of scrimmage in that alignment (A gap, both A gaps, head up on the center, etc). Another nuance I can capture with greater accuracy than usual is the difference between Kirby Smart's "Mint" front and a true 404 where the DL are heads up on the tackles—I think a lot of the Tites I charted this year were actually Mint. Michigan got creative too. This is "Crable": I'll also try to note in the text when Michigan used sim pressures, since that's going to be relevant. [After THE JUMP: Winning a natty.]

Upon Further Review 2023: Defense vs Iowa

UFR GLOSSARY is here. FORMATION NOTES: Iowa spent most of the game in 12 personnel. They often went with an empty look with a TE and two WRs bunched outside that I called it Empty 3x2 Bunch. The other weird formation from Empty had a pair of tight ends stacked a few yards wide of the box. They ran this a lot when they were in comeback mode late. I called it Empty Demi TEs. They also had this heavy formation with a guy halfway between FB and TE than I called I-Heavy H. Also I've shortened "Trips 2TE Bunch" to TTEB. SUBSTITUTION NOTES: Line favored the starters—Moore, Stewart, Goode, and Benny got the same number of drives but between 9 and a dozen fewer snaps. Starting LBs got 80% of the snaps with Rolder sitting out again to preserve his redshirt. Safety was split like the DL. Cornerback was interesting with Johnson out; Sainristil played about 60% of the time outside, with McBurrows at nickel. Sainristil went back to nickel when they stole a drive here or there for Amorion Walker, DJ Waller, and Keshaun Harris, who appeared in that order, though Walker was the only one in when it was still 10-0. McBurrows took a few turns outside as well. Paige got to play some nickel in three-safety sets, as Iowa spent most of the night with two tight ends on the field. VIDEO NOTES: The Fox harassment continues. After YouTube allowed copyright trolls to strike two videos in three I moved to Streamable. I know some people can't access the latter at work but YouTube's policy of allowing these trolls to claim anything for any reason then wait 7 days to even read the long appeal letter I have to write for each one is untenable. I'm frustrated too. Streamable's policy of removing videos if you ever stop paying for your account, and limiting labels, make them a bad fit for this going forward. Vimeo's cost isn't reasonable—they're more for longform videos than clips. I'm out of ideas. [After THE JUMP: Brian Ferentz makes it easy.]

Upon Further Review 2023: Defense vs Ohio State

UFR GLOSSARY is here. FORMATION NOTES: There's no way for me show them all. Here's Eagle Zero: SUBSTITUTION NOTES: Slight tightening of the rotations. Graham and Derrick Moore had the most snaps of the DL, with Jenkins, Grant, Stewart, Harrell out there about half the time, McGregor a bit less, a couple drives of Benny and Goode. LBs were mostly Colson and Barrett, with a dozen snaps for Hausmann in place of Colson and two disastrous snaps for Jimmy Rolder. Rod Moore went the whole way (no Sabb) with Paige giving a quarter of his snaps to Q-Jo. Will Johnson came off a snap after the one he overran Harrison; McBurrows got some nickel time before that, and M put Sainristil outside when Johnson went out. VIDEO NOTES: In recent weeks Fox has been abusing YouTube's awful policies for copyright control to harass anyone with clips from the game without regard to Fair Use. The best you can do is dispute the claim and wait 7 days for them to even bother to check if they violated the law when they blindly issued a strike on your account, and then if Fox denies your dispute you have to escalate to the legal system. This is the plan, and we've been through it before, but it's not very conducive to visual aids in an article that comes out a few days after the game. I put some of the clips on Streamable and will move others over if Fox issues further strikes. [After THE JUMP: The Greatest Game of Football Ever Played.]

Upon Further Review 2023: Defense vs Maryland

UFR GLOSSARY is here. FORMATION NOTES: Maryland mostly stayed in 11 personnel even when they went to twins formations like the below. I called this defensive front from Michigan "Nk Over!" with the exclamation mark denoting extra wide splits between the DL. Also for those of you who weren't around when I was doing the FFFFs, "TaTa Time" is a Maryland-specific play where Taulia Tagovailoa abandons the pocket and runs around 15 to 40 yards behind the line of scrimmage with various slow linemen in pursuit. Results of TaTa Time vary. SUBSTITUTION NOTES: The big thing was Sainristil playing cornerback—I had him for 14 snaps at CB and PFF had him for 10, which I take for a difference of assignment (corner/nickel) vs. alignment (outside/slot), and Ja'den McBurrows coming in for a dozen snaps at nickel. Mike Barrett went out for a quarter and Hausmann got in as much as he did, with Rolder getting half a dozen snaps near the goal line. Jenkins/Graham/Grant and the four DEs got about equal snaps, with Harrell and Graham leading the way. Benny and Goode were out there about a third of the time. Paige got some time in the nickel as well, with Quinten Johnson or Keon Sabb added. They each got about a third of the snaps in rotation as well. Will Johnson went the whole way; Wallace got pulled for McBurrows when Sainristil went outside. [After THE JUMP: Vanilla bean.]

Upon Further Review 2023: Defense vs Penn State

UFR GLOSSARY is here. FORMATION NOTES: PSU gets weird so some nomenclature reminders. This is Gun Wk Stack, which they used a lot. This is Pistol Diamond. And a reminder for some of my nomenclature, this is Gun Trips (H) Y-SB: Trips is the receiver alignment and I use parentheticals around the (H) because the slot receiver is covered/an ineligible receiver. A dash means motion, so Y-SB means the tight end motioned to a superback spot. "Empty 2x1" means 2 wide to the field, 1 wide to the boundary, and the rest are tight ends. You should be able to interpret the rest of the weirdness from there. You also won't need it again because PSU fired their OC on Sunday. SUBSTITUTION NOTES: Penn State often used a TE as a slot receiver; M sometimes matched that with regular nickel personnel but often had an extra safety in the slot and moved Sainristil out to cornerback. Snap counts are in the chart now but there was finally a clear delineation between "starters" (Graham, Jenkins, Grant, the four DEs, Colson, Barrett, Paige, Moore, Wilson, Sainristil, and Johnson) and "rotation players" like Goode, Benny, Hausmann, Q-Jo, and Sabb. That's everybody who played. [After THE JUMP: Draft ding-a-lings.]

Upon Further Review 2023: Defense vs Purdue

Scheduling Note: I apologize for the lateness of this. My prime UFR charting/writing time is on Tuesday but I worked an election (which is a 5am to 10pm commitment plus setup the evening before) this week and only had a quarter charted when it was time to go do that. PSU should be on time. UFR GLOSSARY is here. FORMATION NOTES: More even fronts today than usual, which made the OTs' lives hell but did open up some running lanes inside. Also when Michigan went up to 7 guys with their Split! formation I just called it Split 7 instead of identifying gaps where the LBs lined up. Their other pass-rush formation is this Odd front with a 0-tech nose, two 7-tech DEs, and Harrell a stand-up blitzer that they debuted late against Nebraska. Since nobody has a better name for it I'm calling it Crable, because "Ojemudia at Harrison" is too obscure of a reference. SUBSTITUTION NOTES: Michigan spent the whole game in nickel personnel, treating various backup Purdue TEs/2nd RBs etc. as receivers. Air Raid offense was used for tryouts at CB, as Will, Wallace, Walker, and Waller. In the 2nd half they went a couple of drives with Sainristil at CB and McBurrows at nickel. Jenkins came out as soon as they were up a comfortable margin, with Benny getting a lot more snaps than previous games. The rest was the usual rotation. [After THE JUMP: Stars return.]
