the emergency declaration, which would be enough to overturn it along with democratic votes, though not yet enough for a vetoproof majority. it is widely expected that the president will veto that resolution. let s bring in my panel, kimberly atkins, senior washington correspondent for npr and an msnbc contributor. kevin serilli, bloomberg news chief washington correspondent. and nick achorman here in studio, former assistant special watergate prosecutor and msnbc legal analyst. kimberly, let me begin with you. let s talk about this setback. how big of, how significant of a setback is this for the president knowing that he will have to now use his veto for the first time in his presidency at the hands of his own party? i mean, with the minor caveat that we have seen senator rand paul announce that he opposes something and have him change his mind later, assuming he does pass this vote against this bill it is a setback but it will force the president to veto this legislation that reve
media indictment where the russians used social media to suppress microtarget voters and suppress the hillary clinton vote and the break-in to the democratic national committee. i think there s not going to be a major mueller report as such. it s really going to be one indictment at a time. and this is exactly what happened during the watergate era. everybody was divided. public opinion was divided. but once major indictments came down indicting the president s attorney general, his two top aides, and a whole series of other top aides in the administration, the whole atmosphere changed. and these polls right now i think are meaningless in light of what we might see with major indictments coming down. interesting to hear that. nick, thank you very much. kimberly, appreciate your thoughts as well. kevin, thank you. coming up week, going to have democratic presidential candidates. as we said earlier at the top of the show, they re in selma, alabama today to commemorate the
the lawsuits, led of course by california, i think that might pose more of a risk to the president right now than republicans having enough votes to override his veedo. thank you, kevin, for teeing up the question about the courts. do you think, nick, that the only way to challenge this in a meaningful way and not just symbolically, will it be the courts who make the definitive definition? it very well may be that the courts make the definitive decision here. you ve got that case with harry truman during the korean war trying to take over the steel plants. i think there s good precedent to get rid of this because there s no emergency. the reality check here is this whole thing is based on a lie that was developed by two political operatives, sam nunberg and roger stone, for donald trump sew could go out saying we ve got to build the wall. oh, and by the way, mexico s going to pay for it. the whole thing is a fraud.
does next. kevin, that brings up an interesting point, which is what is congress doing to try to ensure this report gets made. you public? the nbc/ wall street journal poll finds that 2/3 of americans actually want mueller s findings to be released to the public. are you seeing any kind of movement on the hill to try to ensure that when this report gets to the attorney general s office, william barr, that he in some capacity releases it to the public? you re hearing that from democrats, and virtually every democrat i ve spoken with regarding this particular issue for the past several weeks when the administration first floated by william barr s predecessor the acting attorney general at the time that this would be not publicly released, i mean, there was swift condemnation coming from the left. i totally agree with what kimberly said in the sense that i would pick up on the fact that republicans and democrats have virtually frozen into their respective views as to the
the affects the president himself are not interested in those carve outs. gary cohn working overtime to find some sort of way to soften the blow. the big question for next week, does the blow get softened? quickly to you, kevin, you laughed there. i totally agree with the sense in curtis that this helps him in the certain factions of his base. he is heading to pennsylvania, michigan, wisconsin, this helps him. i think this is just somewhat we saw on the trail. the pro-business community versus the grassroots populism is really at a head now with this policy proposal. curtis, you look at a map put up by economist, this is going tahurt more of his base than it is going to help, at least by the numbers. it s really interesting. we ll just have to see how this works and how it whether it helps the president or not. okay. it s going to be a week to find
