Jacque Komnick’s garage was buzzing with a hive of activity late Wednesday afternoon as the girls from Girl Scout Troop 4444 scooped flower seeds into bags and reworked toilet paper tubes.
Just one year ago, the group’s appeal to the Kewanee City Council to change an ordinance that would have hindered their plans for a Silver Service project was front page news. The Troop’s hope to plant a pollinator garden near the Little cabin at the edge of town ran afoul of local law, which they only learned after presenting their garden idea to the Kewanee Preservation Society and researching the city ordinance.

With ever-changing mitigations still underway, you may have been wondering what that means for your local library. No matter where we are in the mitigations, the Kewanee Public Library is still operating as before. We are open 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday and 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. We do ask that you continue to treat us as an “In and Out” Library, staying only as long as necessary and no longer than an hour. Masks continue to be required and must be worn covering your nose and mouth.

Kewanee native reflects on 2020 with new album 'The Great Divide'

Let me Take my Time lyrics from The Great Divide album
Tired of cringing from the discordant notes of 2020, singer-songwriter Brett Conlin changed the arrangement and wrote his own soundtrack for the year that never was.
The five-song album, called “The Great Divide, was inspired by an experience he shared with millions of Americans he never met, each song illustrating the hopes and dreams of friends, family and countrymen whose lives changed alongside his during the 2020 pandemic.
Conlin s album is the lament of all of them, broken down into woeful tones and pleading verses that don t even pretend to answer any of the questions they ask. The tracks are performed only with an acoustic guitar and Conlin s melancholy vocal delivery.

This brief paragraph was buried on page 8 of the Dec. 22, 1903, Kewanee Daily Star Courier: “The United States government wants the flying machine invented by Orville and Wilbur Wright, the Dayton, O., brothers who made a successful test of their invention at Kitty Hawk, N.C.”
That was our hometown’s inauspicious introduction to the age of flight, which had begun a mere five days earlier.
A young Annawan boy was only five years-old at the time, so he surely didn’t read that article. But by 1910, Frederick Eugene Machesney had fallen in love with “aeroplanes,” and within a decade and a half, had become Kewanee’s flying “ace.”
