Azimjon Askarov, a human rights defender and advocate for marginalized communities in southern Kyrgyzstan, should have turned 72 this year. Instead, he died in prison three years ago today.

Kyrgyz authorities have yet to conclude an effective investigation into the death of the human rights defender Azimjon Askarov or to provide redress for his decade of wrongful imprisonment, Human Right watch said today as the second anniversary of his death nears.
