The way in u.s./saudi policy. not on the hill, though, cia director gina haspel. the administration declined to send her to the briefing with those senators where she would have no doubt faced tough questions over the cia s assessment of the khashoggi case. joining me now is democratic senator chris murphy. thanks for joining us. we appreciate it. why do you think the administration declined to send cia director gina haspel to the hill today? i think the answer has been pretty simple as has been reported openly, the u.s. intelligence services have come to the conclusion that it s likely that mohammed bin salman, the crown prince of saudi arabia, ordered the killing of jamal khashoggi. and if that s the case, then why has the administration not taken any action against him? why has the administration not taken any action against the regime? i think they knew that ultimately they wouldn t have answers to those questions if she showed up today. so instead they sent the secretary of defe ....
The parties involved. i m not going to negotiate to the press. that s a foolish thing to do. but we ll have to come together. i think hopefully after the election democrats realize a secure border should not be a republican or democrat thing. it is just good for the country to secure our border. the house is there. we hope the senate comes with us. should congress pursue any kind of formal sanction of saudi arabia for the killing of khashoggi or for its actions in yemen? i won t get into the yemen issue only to say iran bears a lot of responsibility. it is our national security interest to contain iran and their proxy wars and their pursuit of nuclear weapons. with the khashoggi case, it s very important i think we speak with moral clarity. real politics is very important ....
Bolton wouldn t get into it. we know the chairman of the senate foreign relations committee would like to have gina haspel, though that committee has been briefed by her. he would like it to a broader audience. i think to echo what jim was saying, i think it was kind of stunning to me at how dismissive bolton was of the khashoggi case, saying, you know, what am i going to learn from it? obviously they ve had translators listen to it but this can turn into a game of telephone. if you want to avoid hearing the worst of it, that s exactly what they ve done. and then perhaps they have some deniability there. there s another thing that struck me. i was listening to this press conference. a lot of the responses were completely not surprises but the mantra she kept repeating on manafort was there s no wrong doing on his part meaning the president s part, no wrong doing on his part. all of this now, whether it s gm or whether it s manafort or ....
Money? i think the president has put transactions above u.s. values. and that s not just with russia. that s with the khashoggi case. someone said to me yesterday on an airplane, he said i hope you guys keep looking at the russia stuff. this khashoggi deal with the saudis is happening right now in plain sight. and i think he s right. what he means is that the president s prior or existing and we re going to find out if it it s existing because we re going to get his tax returns. his financial interests are driving u.s. foreign policy. in about 39 days there s going to be a lot more light on what those interests are. when you have the subpoena? yes, when we have his tax returns and when we start to be able to interview whether it s not whitaker, whether there is an agreement there to be protected by this new acting attorney general, or whether it s with pardon offers that he s been making to witnesses who are starting to back out of cooperation agreements. a lot of reckoning c ....
Have not been looking at this over the past two years with republicans kroeg the house. absolutely. the optics there. liz, you heard congressman shiv saying this morning that the president is being dishonest to the american public. he said he, too, has been briefed by the cia on the khashoggi case. the president is not telling what he knows. he wants to ask some pointed questions. like what? do you know what those questions would be? i mean, i can t guess what congressman schiff is thinking, but because multiple senators and congressmen who have access to this intelligence say that they believe that mbs did personally order this killing, that he orchestrated it, i would assume they want to ask him, okay, is there some intelligence that you have that we don t have access to? what do you know, mr. president, that we don t know about why mbs is not to blame for this? and then as shawn was saying, they re also very interested in looking into his own personal financial connections to sa ....
