I am on vacation on the island of Kauai, visiting my auntie and uncle in Lihue. They both just retired from long careers as teachers here and are looking for their first plug-in vehicle. They want an SUV or crossover with a higher seating position with at least enough ground clearance to handle a rutted dirt road leading to a hike or beach somewhere on the island. They might be like any other car shopper looking for their first plug-in vehicle, so I decided to help them out with a little research.

Not too long ago, I speculated about the possible electrification of the Kia Carnival minivan, or MPV if you’re picky. Apparently, Kia may be getting close to releasing a hybrid Carnival, as soon as next year in fact.

The Korea Herald recently reported Q1 “eco-friendly” car exports for Kia and Hyundai. As far as I can tell most (but not all) of Kia’s new plug-in vehicles exported outside of South Korea are destined for either Europe or North America. At least some percentage goes to other parts of the world (Australia, for example). What I want to know is: how many plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) is Kia delivering in North America?

I am testing out the efficiency and range of my 2022 Kia Sorento plug-in hybrid, among other things, and this piece concludes my two part review of its performance on a 210 mile road trip. The Sorento PHEV, once again, impresses me with just how efficient it is for a heavy, three-row, mid-sized 6 passenger SUV.

I am getting closer to an answer. However, I am still a bit puzzled by the way the 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV decides which mode, hybrid (HEV) or electric (EV), to operate in when I have placed the vehicle into the Auto mode.
