Last time on Torque News’ Kia plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Q&A, I wrote up responses to a reader’s questions and provided several links to earlier articles I wrote that address similar questions. Now, I am completing my responses to the remainder of the questions. Will this sway their opinions or anyone else’s? That isn’t my point; I am simply trying to provide useful feedback people want to make good decisions. Some of my guidance may simply be circumstantial, but I always try to remain objective.

I’ve owned two plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). They are fascinating vehicles. Though they are not the same class (one: the compact 5 door liftback Chevy Volt, the other: the 3 row midsize Kia Sorento SUV), as PHEVs they both could run in electric only mode for significant distances and consume far less gasoline than equivalent gasoline only vehicles. My two PHEVs behaved differently when driven and while I definitely prefer how Chevy implemented its electric drive mode, I believe that Kia has made a more effective PHEV.

In what I sincerely hope is a thinly veiled U2 reference, the headline of Car and Driver’s recent review of the 2023 Kia Niro plug-in hybrid (PHEV) proclaims that they have found what they’re looking for in this PHEV and that it now “makes a lot more sense”.

Kia has done it again! Their November U.S. auto sales are up over 25% year-over-year, and set a new record, beating the previous bestever November sales by a healthy 8%. Kia’s electrified vehicle sales were also up 133% year-over-year, but once again this is mostly due to increased sales of hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles, and not electric vehicles (EVs).

These days, nearly every car maker has months long waits for many of their new vehicles. It is due of course to lingering supply chain problems that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic and recent conflicts that have disrupted semiconductor manufacturing and the supply of certain raw materials. Automakers like Kia and Hyundai now have some of the longest wait times in the industry, but how long are we really talking?
