Helias junior Matthew Malmstrom came into the final day of the Class 4 state track and field championships Saturday with one goal: Become a state champion.
Malmstrom achieved his goal in the boys 110-meter hurdles, erasing an early deficit to take the lead in the final steps and grab the title.
Tauny Gore was glad to be back at the state championships. And very happy to finish back on the medals podium. Gore, a Helias senior, capped her high-school track career Friday with a third-place finish in the Class 4 girls long jump at Adkins Stadium.
They are ready to throw some big numbers at trying to win state honors. A total of 29 athletes from Helias will take part in the Class 4 track and field state championships today and Saturday at Adkins Stadium.
For the second straight week, the Helias Crusaders will be making the trip down Stadium Boulevard. And for the second straight week, the Crusaders may have the same game plan. Try to run the ball on offense, try to stuff the run on defense.
For just the third time in the long history of the programs, the Jefferson City Jays will take on the Helias Crusaders at 7 p.m. today at Adkins Stadium in a Central Missouri Activities Conference game. Despite all the distractions surrounding a matchup like this, the Jays are treating it just like any other game.
Last week, the Capital City Cavaliers earned their first in-town win in program history. This week, they’ll go for their first city championship. “That game meant a lot to the boys,” Capital City coach Joe Collier said of beating Jefferson City 28-7 last week. “It meant a lot that for a year, after three years, they can say, ‘We won that battle.’ It’s important to them to have those bragging rights.”
It’s a tough offense to slow down, much less stop. The Helias Crusaders know they will have their hands full when they face Capital City and the option attack of the Cavaliers in Central Missouri Activities Conference action tonight at Adkins Stadium. “That’s the key matchup, our ability on defense to stop their run,” Helias coach Chris Hentges said.
The Helias Crusaders are searching for consistency.
“Offensively, we were sluggish again tonight,” Helias coach Chris Hentges said Friday night after the Crusaders dropped a 31-20 decision to the Rock Bridge Bruins on Homecoming at Ray Hentges Stadium.
