Ahoy, Matey! Lookout For 'The Dashing Pirate' In Sioux Falls

Recently, my friends and I were walking out of Granite City when all of a sudden we saw a bird.....and a pirate.  It's not every day a pirate with his trusty bird arrives onshore in Sioux Falls.
We first thought we were seeing things, and then we realized the bird was real!  Naturally, I was curious, and I had to find out who this pirate was and what he was doing in Sioux Falls.
Well, I found my answers.  Meet Mort Aod (otherwise known as The Dashing Pirate).

Mort was born south of Boston, Massachusetts, and he was never far from the water, spending many years between Cape Cod Bay and Buzzards Bay. Other locations Mort has resided in over the years include the suburbs of Chicago and Central-Eastern Illinois. Mort currently calls South Dakota home.

Sioux Falls Pools Are Opening...But It Might Be A Later Date

You know summer is right around the corner when the City of Sioux Falls is talking about opening the city pools for the summer season!  Finally...after a year of COVID-19 squashing summer fun at local pools, it's certainly refreshing to return to some normalcy.
According to the City of Sioux Falls, the Parks and Recreation Department announced the outdoor aquatic facilities are set to open on Friday, May 28th.  However, Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken fears that this date might be pushed back.
In fact, Mayor TenHaken thinks we are potentially dealing with a lifeguard shortage in the City of Sioux Falls.

South Dakota's Favorite Easter Candy Isn't Too 'Egg-xciting'

The Easter Bunny is getting ready to leave some yummy goodies in Easter baskets this weekend.  Or if you're just a bit "too old" for the Easter Bunny, I bet you'll still find a way to indulge in some Easter treats.
Whether you love chocolate eggs or a bowl full of jelly beans, there's always something for candy lovers to enjoy at Easter!  However, there is one, somewhat unusual tidbit of information our friends over at Zippia discovered.  People are eating more than just Easter candy when it comes to consuming their Easter treats.
Hard-boiled eggs?  Yep...I guess that's considered an Easter treat for some people.

Are Businesses Open In Sioux Falls On Easter Sunday?

Are Businesses Open In Sioux Falls On Easter Sunday?
People around the Sioux Empire are out and about hopping over to different retail stores before Easter Sunday. If you're losing track of the dates these days, Easter is this Sunday, April 4th...just a few days away!
It's hard to believe Easter Sunday 2020 basically did not happen.  Churches were shut down, most families did not gather for a big feast, Easter egg hunts were canceled, and most importantly, the COVID-19 pandemic was consuming the entire world.
The pandemic really put a strain on retail store employees throughout the nation.  That in and of itself is all the more reason why most companies are giving their employees a well-deserved day off this Easter. Store associates from these companies will have an opportunity to enjoy some quality family time with their loved ones.

Rolling Stone Titles Gov. Noem "The COVID Queen of South Dakota"

A well-known magazine just published an article featuring South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem.  The good news?  The story called her a "Queen."  The bad news...well it's not the Queen title one would want to have.
On Tuesday, March 16th, Rolling Stone launched a lengthy article in regards to Governor Noem's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  From hosting the Fourth of July Fireworks at Mount Rushmore to the 80th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the writer of the article, Stephen Rodrick, thought "The COVID Queen of South Dakota" would be a fitting name for Governor Noem during this pandemic.  Rodrick also referred to Governor Noem as the "Snow Queen" throughout the article.   Additionally, the article featured interviews with those on the frontlines in the state including an ICU nurse from Rapid City, a Yankton doctor, and State Senator Reynold Nesiba.

Sioux Falls Named "Fittest City" In South Dakota

Insurify, a car insurance company recently made this exciting announcement on its Twitter account.
Data scientists at Insurify used "a platform to compare home insurance, referred to both proprietary and public data to identify the fittest cities. They rated U.S. cities based on a composite score of factors including residents with physically demanding or health- and fitness-promoting jobs as well as quality and access to parks and outdoor recreational facilities."  The team also gathered information from Niche’s most recent Outdoor Activities rankings.  According to the Insurify's study, Niche rated  "each city on its quality and access to the outdoors using key indicators of a location’s environment, such as air quality, local weather, and access to natural amenities and outdoor recreation."

Participants identified 200 possible superstitions. The results supported the notion that South Dakota is better off staying away from anything that comes in threes...It's basically a pattern of unfortunate events that may happen all at once.  "Bad Luck Comes in Threes" is actually the most popular superstitious sentiment for six states, including South Dakota and Nebraska.
