LOUISVILLE, Ky. The Louisvile mother who allegedly shot and killed her 10-year-old son last month before placing his body in the trunk of her car is in need of a mental health evaluation, her attorney argued Tuesday in a court filing.
Kaitlyn R. Higgins, 28, was charged last month with murder (domestic violence) and tampering with physical evidence after police said she admitted to trying to cut out the tongue of her son, Kyon Higgins Jr., before shooting him the night of April 20.
Higgins, also referred to in court records as Kaitlyn Bartram, has since been indicted on those charges and an additional count of first-degree criminal abuse. She remains held in Louisville Metro Corrections on a $500,000 bond.

A 28-year-old Kentucky woman is accused of killing her 10-year-old son, whom police reportedly found in the truck of her car.
According to the Louisville Courier Journal, Kaitlyn R. Higgins tried cutting out Kyon Higgins Jr.’s tongue before fatally shooting the boy and placing him in the back of her automobile. Police found his body wrapped in a blanket shortly before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Louisville Metro Police reportedly got a call from a witness who said they had seen Higgins with a gun and what appeared to be the boy’s dead body wrapped in a blanket. When they arrived, Higgins was on her porch, where police saw what they believe was blood. She was arrested early Wednesday morning and charged with murder and evidence tampering.
