The number of U.S. tuberculosis cases in 2023 were the highest in a decade, according to a new government report. Most U.S. TB cases are diagnosed in people born in other countries. Experts say the 2023 number is in part a combination of a surge in TB cases internationally — the World Health Organization said TB was behind only COVID-19 in infectious fatal diseases worldwide in 2022.
The number of tuberculosis cases in 2023 rose by 15% in California compared to the previous year. That's the highest year-over-year increase in 35 years.
Announcing that the country has witnessed a 13 per cent reduction in TB incidence from 2015 to 2022, he said India has even surpassed the global reduction rate of 10 per cent.
Although India continues to be the largest contributor to global TB cases, there has been a decline in the number of cases in 2021.
India has about two million TB cases including nearly 1.4 lakh multi-drug resistant ones and daily, about 1400 people die of TB.
