George Lafleur teaches first grade at Broadmoor Elementary. He was a student-teacher when schools closed in March 2020 due to COVID-19, and his first year of teaching is different than he imagined.
A teacher s first year in the classroom is hard. While classes, observations and student-teaching are invaluable, there s always still a lot to learn when in charge of your own students for the first time.
The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting safety protocols have put even more on first-year teachers plates.
George Lafleur had been dreaming of being a teacher since he was 12. Now 25, he s in his first year of his teaching career, charged with 14 first-graders at Broadmoor Elementary School in Lafayette. ....

Soileau named administrator of Lafayette Online Academy

Lafayette Parish School System announced Thursday the appointment of Venus Soileau as virtual learning administrator for Lafayette Online Academy.
Soileau has been the principal at Scott Middle School since 2017 and has 13 years of experience in public education, including seven years in an administrative role.
She holds a master s degree in Educational Leadership from the American College of Education. As the new administrator for LOA, Soileau said she looks forward to supporting and leading the program to better serve students and families across the district.
Given the many changes and challenges in our world today, it s important that we continue to offer Lafayette Parish students a viable alternative to traditional classroom instruction that will meet their educational needs, she said. ....

After nine weeks, Megan Romer and Kevin Wimmer found virtual class through Lafayette Online Academy just wasn t a good fit for their 10-year-old son. So they withdrew him to start homeschool instead.
Sarah Beth Laughlin decided to homeschool her four school-age children from the start this year. They even took class on the road when evacuating for hurricanes in the fall.
Andree Lamke does bus duty at Grolee Elementary in Opelousas every morning before heading into her classroom to teach virtual class. Her own children head to their aunt s house to tackle school. ....
