City of Evanston, Northwestern announce $1 million for minority businesses and guaranteed income pilot
Funds will help break down barriers faced by those marginalized in the community.
Evanston Mayor Stephen Hagerty and Northwestern President Morton Schapiro announced today that the first-ever $1 million allocation of the Northwestern Good Neighbor Racial Equity Fund will support a variety of bold, progressive programs aimed at strengthening underserved communities and advancing racial equity in Evanston.
This is the sixth year that Northwestern has contributed $1 million to the City of Evanston to support projects jointly agreed upon by the mayor of Evanston and the president of Northwestern and the first year where the funds will be focused entirely on dismantling systemic barriers faced by historically marginalized communities. ....

Monique Baumont, MPH is a Research & Policy Analyst at the Center for Reproductive Rights, where she synthesizes and analyzes the most current evidence in the areas of maternal and reproductive health to support legal advocacy initiatives. Prior to this role, Monique conducted research regarding adverse childhood experiences in Indonesia and supported Columbia University s Mailman School of Public Health with analyzing and presenting data on issues ranging from forced migration to environmental justice for diverse audiences. In addition to her research experience, Monique previously worked as a Language Access Program Director at the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence, working to expand access to services for Asian immigrant and refugee communities in Massachusetts. ....

Heavican updates senators on judiciary

LINCOLN– Chief Justice Mike Heavican discussed the Nebraska Judicial Branch’s response to the pandemic as well as community access to justice initiatives in his annual State of the Judiciary address Jan 21.
“Because of our Constitution’s dictate and because of our courts’ vital role in society, we have taken the measures necessary to remain open safely, providing uninterrupted access to justice,” Heavican said.
Heavican highlighted the steps the Nebraska Judicial Branch has taken to operate safely. According to Heavican, emergency-preparedness planning began in 2019 when the courts hosted a national planning session with the University of Nebraska Medi ....
