Niceville, South Walton and Collegiate High among Florida's 'best' schools

NICEVILLE Niceville High School placed among the top 50 Florida high schools in a 2021 rankings report released by U.S. News & World Report on Tuesday.
The U.S. News Best High Schools rankings include data on almost 24,000 public high schools and K-12 schools across the country. It ranks almost 18,000 of them. According to U.S. News and World Report, 602 of Florida s more than 1,000 public schools made the list.
Niceville placed highest among schools in Okaloosa and Walton counties, coming in at No. 49 in Florida and No. 886 in the country. Collegiate High School at Northwest Florida State College and South Walton High School both also cracked Florida s top 100, ranking No. 91 and 99, respectively. ....

Laurel Hill, Florida residents, local officials discuss whether city should be dissolved

LAUREL HILL A smaller property tax bill might be the only sure change realized by residents if in early March they decide their little city should be dissolved and become another unincorporated part of Okaloosa County.
Incorporated in 1905, the 3-square-mile Laurel Hill is the county’s oldest city. But with lingering poor road conditions and other troubles on their mind, more than 50 of its 600 or so residents have signed petitions seeking a referendum on whether the city should be dissolved.
That type of quest has happened before, but without reaching the referendum stage and voting booth in the home of the Laurel Hill School Hoboes and Laurel Hill Hobo Festival. With the current City Council’s approval, a referendum was placed on the March 9 ballot asking voters whether to dissolve Laurel Hill. ....
