Mile-long tube into the leaking pipe today. the tube became dislodged but crews apparently reinserted it. cnn's david mattingly joins us from new orleans with more on this effort. david. >> reporter: after more than a week of failures, bp today finally announcing some success in stemming the flow of oil into the gulf of mexico. as you described, that mile-long pipe, the end of it has been inserted into that leaking pipe at the bottom of the gulf of mexico. and they are reporting they had some success when they tested this in pumping that oil up to a containment vessel at the surface. during th...

Leaking pipe has not been successful so far, that they've encountered problems, they're dealing with the pressure of the oil and the gas coming out of there, and at this point, they have not been able to make that option work. they're telling me that it's still their preferred option and they are going to continue to try to make this work and it could take a couple of more days. so another setback. they're learning as they go and again, they keep telling us they have never tried anything like this before, and they've never tried anything like this, obviously, at this sort of depth in the ocean...
