'Living with White Sharks' talk to discuss increase of sharks in New England waters

On Wednesday, March 17, at 6:30 p.m., Dr. Greg Skomal, senior fisheries scientist with MA Division of Marine Fisheries, will present a virtual talk on living with white sharks.
White sharks have been returning to the Gulf of Maine in greater numbers in response to the regional recovery of seal populations. In 2020, Maine experienced its first fatal shark attack. For more than a decade, the MA Division of Marine Fisheries and collaborators have been studying the ecology, behavior, and natural history of white sharks off the east coast of the US. Using state-of-the-art tagging technology, the focus of their current research has been to gain a better understanding of where, when, and how white sharks hunt their prey. ....

Nick Lund of Maine Audubon will lead an online webinar titled “Building with Birds in Mind,” on Tuesday, March 16, at 12 p.m., hosted by Merryspring Nature Center.
“Believe it or not, nearly one billion birds die each year in the United States after striking windows, making building collisions one of the leading causes of bird mortality,” said Merryspring, in a news release. “But, it s a preventable problem.”
In this program, Maine Audubon s Nick Lund will talk about why birds hit windows and how anybody can help save birds from strikes by building with birds in mind. ....

Gibbs Library will be hosting local ecologist Shri Verrill, Sunday, March 7, from 3 - 4 p.m., for an online presentation and discussion about the new Maine Climate Plan. The Maine Climate Council submitted their final plans to the legislature and Governor Mills in December.
Verill’s program will introduce audience members to climate change in Maine, the goals and solutions recommended in the Maine Climate Plan, and what’s needed to put the plan in motion to benefit people and the environment. There will be time for questions following the presentation. ....

Join Holly and Elmer Savage as they discuss their pioneering efforts in Maine s grape growing and winemaking industry and the unique challenges of cold-climate grapes during the Vose Library Zoom with Vose at 6pm Wednesdays on March 3, 2021.
In 2000, Elmer and Holly Savage bought their farm on Barrett Hill Road from Elmer s parents. In 2002, they planted four varieties of cold hardy wine grapes, 1,000 vines, and thus started Savage Oakes Vineyard and Winery. Over the next four years they continued to plant vines, and in 2005 had their first harvest. Savage Oakes Vineyard and Winery opened their doors with their first vintage, consisting of four labels, in 2006. Since then the winery has increased production to 17 different styles, with all but one estate grown. ....
