"Applying Legitimation Code Theory to teach breastfeeding in nurse educ" by Suzanne Bowdler, Wendy Nielsen et al.

Aim: To use Legitimation Code Theory as a framework to inform the design of nursing education and gain insights into student perspectives of this design. Background: Internationally, the World Health Organization's breastfeeding recommendations are not being met. One contributing factor is that healthcare providers including registered nurses lack the knowledge to support breastfeeding women on an ongoing basis and rely on their personal experiences to inform the care they provide. Undergraduate nursing students should receive education to assist breastfeeding women in practice. Design: The study is underpinned by case-study methodology. The Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) dimension of Semantics and the concepts of semantic gravity and semantic density were used to theoretically frame and develop an intervention module to teach undergraduate nurses about breastfeeding. Methods: This module was part of an elective seven-week paediatric nursing course. University Human Research Ethic ....

"Preservice Teachers' Views of the "Social Embeddedness" Tenet of the N" by Helen Georgiou

It is generally accepted that a robust science education includes knowledge of science, as well as knowledge about science, or, in other words, an understanding of the “Nature of Science.” However, debates around what Nature of Science is and how to measure it are far from settled, and this compromises our ability to support teachers and students develop their understanding in this area. In this paper, two approaches assessing one aspect of the Nature of Science, the degree to which is it “socially embedded,” are compared. The VNOS-C was administered to a cohort of pre-service secondary science teachers and analyzed using the traditional approach as well as a new approach, using “Specialization” from a framework known as Legitimation Code Theory. The results from the standard analytical approach revealed that preservice teachers’ ideas were overwhelmingly Naïve or Mixed, and that these did not change over the course of the semester. However, there was insufficient discri ....

"Creativity in Higher Education: A Qualitative Analysis of Experts' Vie" by Helen Georgiou, Annette Turney et al.

Creativity has been identified as an increasingly important graduate attribute for employment in the 21st century. As sites of significant development of disciplinary specialization, universities seem to be the natural place for creativity to be fostered. However, there remain contestations and ambiguities in the ways creativity is theorized, and this translates to difficulties in operationalization, particularly in the higher education context, which attracts significantly less research than the school setting. Here, we report on interviews with physicists, historians, and poets, as both educators and producers of knowledge that progresses their disciplines, to provide elaborations on the nature of creativity. We draw on sociological theory to elucidate the characteristics of creativity as expressed by experts in particular disciplinary fields. We find that whilst perceptions appear common across the disciplines, on further analysis, they tend instead to encapsulate discrete attribute ....
