Guided by the spirit of “Aloha,” the gathering resembled one big family reunion. The event began with a Hawaiian prayer, grounding the community in gratitude as the speaker thanked the attendees and encouraged all to have fun.
Lei were presented during the closing ceremony for Lei Day on Thursday at Mauna Ala, also known as the Royal Mausoleum. As an annual tradition, lei from the Lei Contest the day before are presented as ho’okupu and placed on the graves of Hawaii’s ali’i.
Hawai‘i’s talented lei makers showed out this May Day with dazzling submissions to the annual lei contest, celebrating the Hawaiian tradition.
