Better-than-expected school grades have Big Bend and state education officials breathing a sigh of relief

Florida is back to issuing school and district grades after a two-year pause due to disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic. This year, no district in the Big Bend earned less than a “C” while the long-troubled Jefferson school district got an incomplete grade.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. WTXL — Leon County Students, parents, and even district administrators can hardly hide their excitement to participate in near-traditional graduation ceremonies this year. Concerns over COVID safety prompted drive-in graduation ceremonies last year.
"Last year, that's all we heard, 'my baby can't walk across the stage, I...' You know, that type of thing, so we're elated," said Leon County Schools assistant principal Dr. Michelle Gayle.
Gayle shares the sentiment with Leon High School parent Tia Walton-Walker.
"I'm excited. I'm ecstatic," said Walker. "Because they have worked so hard, they've followed all the rules, they've done such a great job, so this is a great way for them to celebrate all of their hard work."

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Starting in the Fall, all Leon County schools will no longer offer digital classes. It's a decision, district leaders say, gets students, teachers and parents back to normal.
"We will be closing those digital Academies at the end of the school year and again opening our arms to all those that want to return next fall," said Leon County Schools Superintendent Rocky Hanna.
In August, parents can either return their child to brick-and-mortar classes or switch to the broader digital class offering. Right now, only about 260 students are currently enrolled in Leon Virtual School, compared to roughly 10,000 students whose parents opted for the school-based digital classes.

All Florida schools were required to allow students back in physical classrooms last fall, in addition to remote learning options.
Leon County public schools will drop their school-based digital academies at the end of the academic year. Superintendent Rocky Hanna made the announcement at Tuesday’s school board meeting.
“We’ve done an amazing job of giving parents and families options and keeping them connected to their home zone school or school of choice,” Hanna said. “But we certainly can’t ask this lift again of our teachers moving into the fall.”
Hanna says students who want to continue learning remotely have the option of enrolling in the Leon County Virtual School.
