Africa Day symposium: Harness Africa's youth dividend

Story Helen Swingler.
Read time 10 min.
Besides the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, high unemployment, war and conflict, Africa’s youth are expected to fulfil the mission of ushering in the ‘Africa We Want’.
Africa must nurture and celebrate its youth and the power they have to change the continent’s narrative, said Tanzanian Ambassador Ombeni Sefue, chair of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), at the opening of a virtual 2021 Africa Day Public Symposium.
The youth-centred symposium on 24 May was hosted by the APRM and the African Union (AU) in collaboration with the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance (NMSPG). The next day marked the 58th annual commemoration of Africa Day, which celebrates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now the AU), in 1963.

Lessons in remembering District Six

Memories of District Six are as varied and diverse as the community that inhabited the inner-city area before being forcibly removed by the apartheid government.
Some of these memories are about the rich politics of District Six, others about its cultural contributions.
The 55th anniversary of the declaration of District Six as a whites-only area on 11 February 2021 offers a moment to reflect on what it means to so many.
Some remember District Six as a veritable melting pot while others have chosen to remember the area through a racialised apartheid lens. But even with this "contested history" of District Six, there are many lessons to be learnt, particularly when confronting issues of gentrification, homelessness, diversity and identity.

He gave his all as a photographer and to journalism in the three decades he served Mzansi though his lens.
