Press Release of the First Meeting of the Joint Committee Between the Libyan Side and European Union Integrated Border Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM)
Libya's eastern authorities Sunday announced the postponement of a reconstruction conference for the flood-hit city of Derna that had been planned for October 10 but was met with international scepticism. The authorities later said that the conference would draw in international companies, and on Sunday the committee said the postponed event would be held in both Derna and the eastern city of Benghazi.
Devastating floods in Libya have exposed previously hidden archaeological structures in an ancient Greek city near Derna, prompting calls for preservation and restoration efforts.
Libya's prosecutor general ordered the arrest of eight officials in his investigation into the deadly flood tragedy.
The devastating floods that swept through Libya earlier this month have revealed new structures at an ancient Greek city near Derna. The Libyan authorities who came to inspect the ancient city and salvage what could be saved unexpectedly found archaeological sites that appeared after the floods subsided. Dr. Ahmed Issa from the Department of Archeology at Omar Al-Mukhtar University said that a national committee consisting of experts should be formed to classify the new archaeological monuments and develop a plan to restore the area.
