David Clifton, Licensing Expert: Gambling can't hide from its spotlight

Licensing Expert” article for SBC News, the stand-out issues in UK gambling regulatory terms have been (a) the circumstances giving rise to the UK Government’s 20 April announcement of an independent review into the collapse of Football Index and (b) the sudden unexpected departure of Neil McArthur from his position as Chief Executive of the Gambling Commission within just a few days after the Football Index operating licence was suspended. The above announcement states that an ‘independent expert’ (a) will lead the review and (b) in addition to establishing how Football Index collapsed and identifying lessons to be learned from that, will look at the decisions and actions of the Gambling Commission with a view to the findings being made public in the summer. Those findings will also form part of the evidence for the purposes of the governmen ....

Irish People Drink The Equivalent Of 40 Bottles Of Vodka Per Year

According to new research, Irish people drink on average more than 10 litres of alcohol per year.
It s the equivalent of 40 bottles of vodka, 113 bottles of wine or 436 pints of beer.
The Health Research Board has found that alcohol consumption levels have plateaued since 2013, but people s consumption remains significantly higher than the government s 2020 target of no more than 9.1 litres of pure alcohol per person a year.
Professor Frank Murray, chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance Ireland, and Christopher Snowdon, Head of Lifestyle Economics at the UK-based Institute of Economic Affairs, joined us to discuss this. ....
