Prices witnessed a surge in the first sale, especially for leaf varieties
The New Year brought some cheer to traders at the Kochi tea auctions, which witnessed a surge in prices, especially for leaf varieties, in the first sale.
Traders cited better export enquiry and procurement for North Indian market for lifting prices in sale 1, evident in the average price realisation that went up to ₹158 per kg from ₹149 in the previous week. Sales were good with 94 per cent of the offered quantity of 2,05,579 kg sold.
Traders said the commencement of off season in North Indian markets has forced buyers to start procuring leaf from South Indian auctions and this would further push up prices in the forthcoming trade. Exporters confined themselves mainly to orthodox leaf while upcountry buyers focused on CTC leaf. ....

Tokyo, Jan 7 (IANS) Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Thursday declared a state of emergency in the Tokyo metropolitan area, which also included the Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures, authorising tougher measures to fight a recent Covid-19 resurgence.

Since the evacuation of 33 students from Wuhan City, in February 2019, the Ministry has been carrying out the task of repatriation for almost a year now and to date 60,470 Sri Lankans, composed of pilgrims, students, Officials of Government or Armed Forces, migrant workers, short term visitors, sea farers and cases on compassionate grounds have been repatriated from 137 countries by the Ministry through the Sri Lanka Missions overseas.
Despite the worsening global situation triggered by the Covid pandemic, the process of repatriation of Sri Lankans, one of the most pressing challenges at hand has been judiciously spear headed by the Foreign Ministry under the directive of Minister Dinesh Gunawardana, enduring insurmountable challenges overseas amid lockdowns, isolations, curfews and closure of air space, to ensure swift return of Sri Lankans who are in distress. ....
