The director of a newly registered company that has been linked to alleged corruption in the storage and distribution of vaccines says he is a "poor man" who survives by helping illiterate people register their companies.
Serati Simon Mashilo, the sole owner of Jova Vaccines Supply, became an overnight sensation after a message circulated that the company, which was registered on January 29, had been lined up to score a massive tender from the provincial government due to his alleged links to premier Rifilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane...

Schools story announced birth of Sowetan 40 years ago

A story about the SA schools population increasing by 100,000 pupils in 1981 got veteran journalist Len Kalane a spot on the front page of the first edition of Sowetan 40 years ago.
“The evolution of time is an amazing phenomenon. That story I wrote was about scale. At the time, SA had a population of 29m excluding blacks who lived in homelands. The 100,000 of new pupils was an astronomical number that time and that is why the story made it to the front page. Then township school kids were ordinarily in class at any given day or time. They didn’t roam the streets like they do today. It was strange for us to see so many of them walking the streets. That was unheard of back then,” said Kalane...

A triumphant Dr Nonkosi Ngumbela, who has been blacklisted for almost three years from servicing patients  from Medscheme, says she is vindicated after three medical aid schemes were found to have racially profiled black practitioners.
“I’m excited that the truth is finally out but I still have deep anger at how my name had been dragged through the mud by criminals who ran rampant, destroying the lives of many black doctors. Some of my colleagues’ children were so looking forward to following in their parents’ footsteps but have since chosen different career paths because of the frustrations their parents went through,” said Ngumbela, 61, a general practitioner of more than 30 years from East London in the Eastern Cape...
