Linkage, then you have administration official going on not saying whether there s linkage or not. so where are we in this process as a new work week begins? the problem for democrats is that biden may have backed off of his comment but that doesn t mean that senator sanders has, nancy pelosi has. many democrats are still seeing a linkage even if the president doesn t directly say i will veto this if i don t get that. the trick is the republicans are linking it on the other side. some republicans saying i won t go for the infrastructure bill if i don t get commitment from the democrats that they won t support a reconciliation package for this other spending that the president wants. the two are, in fact, on these parallel and sometimes intersecting paths and how you get one done, you know, while still working on the other is going to be a task ahead for both the president and democrats. just because he has backed off ....

This deal as nirvana, the greatest deal that s ever been struck essentially for the american people and then in a sort of very short period of time say i m not going to sign it unless it arrives on my desk with this other separate bill for social spending. initially the white house, their position was nothing changed, you didn t hear what you think you heard kind of thing and then he put out a statement, obviously that wasn t good enough. he basically walked it back completely with this statement that he put out. so, look, i think there s going to be a lot more twists and turns before anything gets signed into law but this was a pretty big one. chris: dana, let me pick up on that. because yes, the president is now saying there s no linkage between the bipartisan deal on infrastructure and the other all-democratic deal on social spending. but i still wonder, the basic problem, isn t it still there for republicans if you support ....

Among republican lawmakers. the issue was it so much that democrats were going to go along with their own reconciliation track. that was always intended and republicans were planning to run against that. especially around political messaging heading into the 2022 midterms. if democrats were going to raise their own taxes to pass their own priorities. so that, was fined as long as republicans maintained their own bipartisan deal. but that linkage that biden did, trying to keep the two tracks together in tandem, not signing one without the other, that s what sparked the outrage. and it wasn t just republican lawmakers. especially with that linkage. i m honored to they were okay with reconciliation but didn t think that they would be put together. they thought it would be a separate conversation around the. here s some of what democratic congressman sheila jackson lee had to stay here s where i think we are going to go. down to the wire. there is going to go down to the wire. ....

The trillion dollar infrastructure bill and give the president this bipartisan win, you know that in the next step whether there s normal link yag or not he s linkage he s going to go behind you and try to spend a 2 or 3 trillion-dollar social spending bill. i think the problems are still very much on the administration s and on the democratic side of things rather than the republicans. because a couple things. first of all, the administration took what was a terrible, no good, very bad week and made it worse by the statement of a vees toe threat and a of a veto threat and a walkback of the veto threat. i have a feeling that senator mcconsistent connell won t let his members get roll. it s the democrats that are in a fix because they don t have enough votes to play with. if they had 55 seat majority, maybe they would be fine. but they don t. they have 50 and they still have senators like manchin and kyrsten sinema. ....

Multitrillion deal. they said that was fine. democrats were going to raise taxes to do it. but republicans could run against them politically, especially in the 2022 midterms against that message. the fact that biden is now linking these two packages, both the bipartisan bill and the reconciliation package together and saying he would only pass one with the other, that s causing the concern here, and that s what you hear from mcconnell. but i should note it s also not just republicans but some of the moderate democrats, including those within this bipartisan group negotiating at the white house are now increasingly worried about this linkage here and that includes senator joe manchin. they have said they re okay with reconciliation. they just thought it would be a separate conversation. that s what we re hearing from some of the democratic aides around all of this. biden s working the phones and he actually had a conversation with senator sinema, one key line out of this readout we got ....
