juror number ten. he s man in his stuff, these terms his from southern the southern part of delaware. and one of the things that we heard from the defense team as we were going through this trial was they believed that politics had a role in why hunter biden was even facing these charges. he said the defense team believe that the us attorney who was appointed by donald trump was essentially bullied into going after hunter because of criticism from house republicans and republicans in general. i asked the juror number ten, who did not want to be to show his face on television, whether their politics played any role in these deliberations. listen to what he had to say if anybody, was in that courtroom or in the jury room, they would know it was not motivated by politics politics played no part whatsoever in my mind no. i can t speak for the other jurors but nothing was nothing was ever said about this election year that was never brought up and aaron, we also he also told me that that the gun form that hunter biden signed back in october of 2018 when he bought the firearm that was the crucial piece of evidence in his mind and he believe that hunter biden lied when he signed it, and none of the other evidence from the from the from the defense to try to explain it away, really worked on the part of the jury one of the things that may come up by the defense team, they do they are weighing an appeal of this of this verdict is the fact that jurors never got to see a second oppression at that form, because the judge did not allow it. and so i asked the juror whether he believed that that would have made a difference. he said it would not have aaron sheep all right. i evan, thank you very much. outside that courthouse and having a chance to speak to turn number ten, which was obviously so fast thing is we d we d heard about the jury and their reactions and who they are all right. i m a panel with me now, katie rogers, i want to start with you because you have covered the biden family closely for a long time at the new york times and now we re seeing the president arrive in delaware, greeting his son. what are your sources telling you about how this has impacted president biden personally? well, i think everyone who has spoken to me who is close to the president and close to the bidens. they always really reiterate to me how much the president believes in his sons ability to stay sober. he s very proud on that level of his son and they always stressed to me that, yes, he is worried about the legal problems ahead for hunter biden, but he believes in his son s ability to continue his recovery. now, that said, the people close to him say that this is the thing that more than anything else he wakes up. if he s briefed by aids on gaza, the next immediate get thing is about his son or he is constantly in contact with his son. they speak at least once a day. so this is something that is going to add more weight to the president s mindset. he s already been quite worried about these legal problems, never having an end for his son. and this just adds to that, right? it didn t certainly at a crucial time in this case campaign. congressman buck, i wanted to play something else for you that juror number ten shared with evan perez about hunter biden. let me play it i did have empathy for him, for his addiction i don t wish that on anybody and especially correct. okay. let me let was the has to be a terrible dickson it comes from i think just significant that that juror says that after they unanimously convicted him on all counts. right. but still able to have that human empathy and obviously a lot of americans can relate to that who are dealing with this themselves or with others and their families, some sort sort of addiction the president though is to deal with the political side of this. do you think that he has managed this? appropriately as a father and as a president congressman yeah, i do. i think it s very difficult. you look at your son having an addiction like bad. the federal government, the congress obviously passed this law because folks who are addicted to drugs and buy guns are more likely to commit crimes. so certainly not a hunter biden category necessarily, but i think the joe biden president biden has done a great job of trying to stay above the fray and recognizing that his department of justice was a very difficult position attorney general merrick garland appointed a special counsel s so that that council would be independent and render independent judgment. and i think that people look at this case and recognize that it was done in an independent and fair way the idea that there may have been other crimes are really irrelevant. this this defendant totter biden, got a fair trial, a quick jury verdict, and i think that joe biden made the right statements after the verdict ryan, the thing is this this is not done for hunter biden or for joe biden, the whole family, right? he can still appeal just even on this case, i m i m talking separately from the tax case, which is very serious. but on this case alone, is this going to drag out for the remainder of election between sentencing appeals and all kinds of this process 100% because he s going to both appeal on the grounds that certain evidence should not have been excluded from the defense. and he s going to appeal on the grounds that under the second amendment, the constitution, that this particular criminal provision should be invalid and none of that is going to be sewed up before november. in fact, we ll probably at least a year from now before any of that gets stored up, even conservatively speaking, well, even conservatively speaking. all right, so that s a long time, katie, and it s certainly shows in terms of weighing on the president all the way through the election way beyond, but through the election i mentioned how joe biden, the first lady, was not able to get there in time today because happened so quickly. she wasn t actually able to be in the courtroom for the verdict but she was there almost every day. hunter sister was there is on its uncle a lot of other family members, his daughter testified ex girlfriends wives and we ve seen support from almost all of them on hunter and he s recovery. it has been something that clearly has damaged and hurt this family for a long time. they ve struggled with it what does the conviction mean, katie, for the whole family? i mean i think that this family has dealt a hunter biden has detailed his addictions over the years in various ways, whether it s through a memoir, through a lengthy magazine profile. but for the rest of this family, it s been a really long private, painful battle as we saw, this week during and last week during the trial. sorry these members of the biden family, onetime members of the biden family in current members recounted what was essentially they had all described as a held that they were in with him and a conviction is really the first time this very private battle has been laid bare for public consumption. so it s uncomfortable for them and they have had to sit there and here the shrapnel hit them yet again of hunter biden s choices have had to sit there and listen to him in his own words through his memoir, recount his drug use is a painful time for them congressman buck, president biden was asked about whether he would pardon his son right? on this crucial point, i want to play that exchange. it was with david muir let me, ask you will you accept the jury s outcome, their verdict no matter what it is? yes. and have you ruled out a pardon for your son? yes. you have congressman buck, how do you feel about this when he s saying that to show he believes in the system and he s not going to question it with a witch-hunt to rigged and all that, right? clearly, it is his son how do you feel? does he have to take this all the way to the mat? no. pardon? no commutation of his prison sentence, which by the way, he did not he did. not commit to or or do you think it would be appropriate and not hurt belief in the system if he were to commute his son sentence i don t think president biden wouldn t do anything until after the appeals are finished. number one, and that s going to happen after the election so he s going to have much more flexibility after the election whether he wins or loses to make a decision like this. now, if he were to engage in a pardon of president trump with president trump was victims of a federal crime at the same time that he pardon his own son. i think americans would understand a father doing that but i think he made the right statement at the time and that is i m not going to show preferential treatment to a member of my own family and a quick final word, ryan, just to be clear that this would go another year, you also have a very serious yes tax evasion charge, federal charge in california, which would carry significant present time that is underway. that s right. and the justice department said that it could carry up to 17 years in jail. and what s unfortunate for hunter biden is because you didn t do a plea deal. he will now have to convictions potentially steck up against each her to us sentencing guideline. the conviction that he just got today in delaware would count against him. he will not be a first-time offender if he is convicted in california. right. which could affect sentencing. i thank you very much. ryan. katie, and congressman, i appreciate all of you very much next trump and his supporters called the doj rigged and political. so what are they saying tonight? today. i ve given a speech on tighter tighter gun controls. yeah. and keeping guns out of the hands of felons and people who don t don t deserve them. and his sons on trial. i think yeah, it s just it s a crazy time in america full of folic contradictions, but, yeah, but this was, this was a sad day and i think it was inappropriate result. i don t think he s going to jail for very long. my off the cuff assessment is scheduled for 1016 months as the first defender and the judge may well go below that and give him a probationary sentence. who knows? yeah. it s not going to be a punitive situation i think it s very hard for republicans to insist that this is somehow a ruse. well, i mean it s sort of amazing. it seems to me that if you did get a guilty verdict here, that this would be something behavior and these words maybe they feel like they re above the law. and a lot of ways they are. we don t have an enforceable code of ethics for the supreme court they essentially police themselves and that ruling is really important because it only proves me right, and it proves all of us, right? who think that he of course knew about the flags. of course, he he endorsed them and him making those statements to congress that oh, my wife did it. i don t know about it. oh, i did it because of a neighbor. those are lies and this is important for our country. we need to, we need to hold our that is tonight s last ward, the 11th hour starts now. tonight, hunter biden is guilty in the federal gun case. what is next for the president s son as he awaits sentencing? my exclusive interview with trump s former national security advisor. why he thinks we are not taking the former presidents threats seriously enough. why congress is being lost. the 11th hour gets underway on this tuesday night. good evening once again, we are now 147 days away from the election. today the president s son hunter was convicted on all counts in the federal gun trial. the jury deliberated for three hours. biden excepts the outcome of the case and will always be there for his son. reporter: tonight, president biden arriving in delaware, hugging his son on the tarmac after hunter biden became the first child of a sitting resident found guilty in a criminal trial. it took three hours of deliberations for 12 jurors to determine that hunter biden was guilty of three felony counts, from lying about his drug use in order to purchase a gun. the prosecution saying this was not a case about his struggles with crack but his decisions to break the law. his the choice to lie and purchase a gun. it was these choices that made his conduct dangerous. reporter: inside the courtroom the president s son did not react, he left holding the hand of the first lady later releasing a statement saying i am more grateful today for the love and support i experienced today then i am disappointed by the outcome. it comes after four days of damning testimony. many testifying about his drug use around the time he filled out the background check saying he was not a drug user. his ex-girlfriend testifying he witnessed him smoking crack every 20 minutes or so. the defense argued that hunter biden did not knowingly lie on the farm. tonight we spoke with juror number 10. you felt that you and the jurors separating politics from the case was not difficult. correct. for us it is not politically motivated. politics did not play into anything we said in the jury room. president biden said we are not pardoning our son. he said joe and i will always be there for hunter and the rest of our family with love and support. nothing will change that. with that let s get smarter with the help of the leadoff panel this evening. mike is here, he has covered biden and the family for more than a decade. susan a staff writer for the new yorker. mike, you know i am going to you first. you know this president and his family better than any other reporter out there. how are they reacting to this? biden has a lot of family expressions and one of them i hear the most often is family is everything. the beginning, the middle and the end. i have seen them come together to celebrate the biggest triumphs, the election and the inauguration, but i have also seen them come together to endorse some of the most tragic moments as a family. this is one that yet again brought the family together to take stock of a difficult moment. the past week and a half has been difficult, reliving through the trial, the most difficult moments of their family, starting with the death of bo and what it did to hunter leading to the addiction. as i talk with people close to the family, i have been struck by a tone of defiance and a resoluteness about what comes next. there has been concerned about what it means politically but also personally for biden. he is 21 weeks away from his last election, 16 days away from a consequential debate against trump. the tone i am hearing from people close to the president is that they are proud as the public service as a family and nothing will stop them from achieving the goal they set out in front of them. the politics, the legal situation does not get easier from here but they are determined to face it together as a family. you wrote in the la times that the juries decision was right but the prosecutions was wrong. what does that mean? the doj guidelines have ways of handling cases and cases like this in which somebody lies on a farm but does not do any other crime with the gun or is not part of a gang are universally dismissed were treated with the severity that david treated this one and that is how david first proposed to treat this a year ago when the gun charges were going to be the subject of a divergent agreement, if hunter kept clean for two years it would go away. the screening question, not the jury verdict but the decision to charge presents, is what happened since then to change his view of what was the proper punishment and treatment of hunter to take it outside how doj practice would normally treat it and because he was a special counsel, nobody in the supervisory structure which would normally say we do not do that, nobody was there to say that and i think it is certain for whatever reason that hunter was treated more severely than any other defendant with the same facts. susan, you have written you don t think a game changer can change voters minds about this election, i am assuming you do not think this verdict will have much of a impact. we are getting to the point where you are anticipating me well. if trumps conviction and becoming the first convicted felon in american history who is a former president, if that was not a radical change, i do not see the conviction of a private citizen, even one that is the sign of the current president to be a game changer in this race. it is that close. a minor shift at best toward biden. it is not clear how this conviction of his son will play politically. certainly republicans were immediately questioning this, saying this is a distraction, there were all sorts of conspiracy areas, default setting from some of trumps public supporters and defenders. hunter is not running for president and that is the bottom line. there is no evidence that years of investigations of him, dragging his name around, has affected biden s political standing and i do not anticipate this would either. hunter is not running for president, he has no role in the government, past, present or future. what could he look at as far as a sentence goes? the standard guidelines would dictate a sentence between 15-21 months based on the conduct and lack of criminal history. those are just recommendations. my best guess, consistent with others, is that he will receive less than that from the judge. remember there is still the tax charges he has to face and david made it clear today that the investigation is ongoing and he may be targeting some of hunter s conduct in 2014 in china in business dealings but for this charge itself i expect him to get a sentence that is a matter of months, not 15-21 that the guidelines would otherwise dictate. even if it is just a few months, hunter biden has secret service protection, how does that work? your guests is as good as mine. we know the secret service prepared a plan when it came up with trump, trump would have his own wing and people would be there. there would have to be a lot of cooperation with authorities. here it is easier because it is federal authorities. still that will be worked out one way or another. that is the least of the practical issues this conviction poses today. you just laid it out for us how close the biden family is and how defiant the president is when it comes to protecting his family. at this time last year i interviewed the president, much to his teams anger and fury, i asked about hunter and he clearly said my son is innocent and good. the president is heading deeper into this campaign, how will he handle the questions he is asked, the narrative around hunter now that we have a guilty verdict and a president that does respect the rule of law and decisions made by a jury? ink about the gauntlet ahead, 16 days from now is the first debate. tomorrow the president is leaving for a important foreign trip, he will be at the g7 summit meeting with other key leaders as well as pope francis. you know how close this president is with that pope. then he comes back and has a little over a week to prepare for that debate. we have never seen a rematch between combatants like trump and biden and we know the strategy on the part of the former president is to likely try to get under biden s skin and use this against him. the biden team looks back at 2020 when hunter was a frequent political cudgel that tried to be used against him. they say it did not work then and it backfired on trump so they are presenting this as a do this at your own peril to trump but i do think that is a concern for people close to biden, as important as preparation is, will he be able to focus on the task at hand, the answer from those i spoke to earlier today is that will not be a issue. former president trump and his friends at fox news said it over and over, where is hunter. it seemed like years. after today s verdict, the trump campaign was basically silent. saying it is just a distraction. what is going on susan? first of all, i guess now that trump wears the label of convicted felon and been the spearhead of the most concerted assault we have ever seen by one political party in this country against the very legitimacy of the legal system, it is not a comparison that is a favorable one. where you have democrats from the president down today that we respect the rule of law and biden will not issue a pardon for his son. as painful as it is, we think the jury system works. so the contrast with trump is obviously one that is unfavorable. i am struck by how quickly trumps allies immediately reverted to conspiracy theories and make-believe. i cannot stress that enough. they are still in burnet down mode. when it comes to the legal system. that includes trying to imply that this case is a distraction from the real secret being covered up, the real case that should be brought against hunter. whatever the conspiracy theory is, it is part of a purposeful and political plan to rip down the authority and legitimacy of the legal system because of donald trump. republicans like to say the current resident weapon ices the justice department but i want to hear what democrat jim mcgovern said about that very thing. when a republican is convicted it is weaponization but when a democrat is convicted, the presidents son no less, that is justice? give me a break. hunter was found guilty by a jury of his peers just like trump come up this is the justice system at work. it is a great reminder that one political party remains committed to the rule of law and the other does not. jim mcgovern ringing irrational thought to a political party. crazy to do these days. there is a lot of apolitical people out there. it seems like what he just laid out would be a contrast for voters, is it? i do not think enough people are. when you hear trump saying things like retribution can be justified, what he means is i am saying retribution can be justified and i think he has a list of adversaries he wants to go after and i think the justice department under his administration will be under chaos as he tells his appointees to go after people whether they have grounds to do it or not. those lawyers will tell you about their legal integrity but it will put the judiciary under a lot of pressure. you may be on that list, are you concerned for your own safety? i am concerned about a lot of people he made it clear he wants to go after. he tried to suppress my book and he tried to get a criminal investigation started and they were both settled because they were without merit. i do not think those technicalities stand in his way. for example he said he wants to prosecute the former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff for daring to have a conversation with his chinese counterpart to ensure the chinese state do not need to worry and trump said that is treason and reminded people that death penalty used to apply. i think he is serious. this will be a retribution presidency and the justice department will be where the rubber meets the road. you called the new york verdict the fire bell in the night and you urged your party to nominate somebody else at the convention. do you think that is something that could realistically happen? is there a group working on this? i do not think it is realistic but i do think people should have a gut check one more time at least. for most americans, voting for a convicted felon will be a obstacle. you can say all you want this was a result of political discrimination against trump. he will be able to raise selective prosecution argument on appeal. new yorkers found him guilty because the facts the prosecution presented were clear. that is a problem the party will have an could affect senate candidates and house candidates. i think if he is elected, electing the first convicted felon as president will cause real damage to the u.s. and how we are perceived abroad. given the guilty verdict today for hunter biden, what do you say to those republicans that claimed that biden has weaponized the doj and made hit his political tool? and basically shot his son in the process. it is a conspiracy theory. you could not do in that department what trump supporters say has been done and not have it leaked to every major media outlet in the country. it is possible to be the victim of selective prosecution and also be guilty. i think certainly that is probably true in trump s case and in hunter s case they are not done with him. there will be a income tax case and a special counsel s investigation into hunter. so i would like to see what the impact of this case is on the election. even though it is not joe biden and see what people think when he says for trump, the entire world is against him, apparently against hunter as well. do you think trump is a threat to democracy? i want to know if you believe it and if so, what would it look like? i do not think he is a threat to democracy or our system. i think he will cause enormous damage in a second term and it will be a term of confusion and turmoil but the idea that trump will overthrow the united states constitution or the republic or that he is a threat to democracy gives him too much credit. it is important to state the threat accurately, not overstated or understated. to understand the nature of the threat so people that oppose it can combat it effectively. overdoing it gives trump a break and that is a mistake. you have said trump does not have the brains for dictatorship even though he would say that he would be a dictator on day one. does that make him less dangerous if he is not that smart but still wants to be a dictator? it goes to the point while trump has a infinite span of attention when it comes to the greater glory of trump, his attention span on most other issues are equal to a fruit flies. so his opponents and even some of his supporters that try to move him away from the most dangerous things he does will have plenty of room to try to step in. i am not trying to minimize what i see trump doing. what he was doing at the end of his first term is where it will pick up the day he is inaugurated and it is serious but when you say the republic is self will fall like the roman republic fell, really? people think trump is equal to julius caesar? give me a break. he may not be but this time around he will not have the safety guards of you or mcmaster and the list goes on. are you concerned about the people in his current orbit and what they are capable of doing? yes i think any administration in a second term does not attract the quality of people it does in the first. the runway in the second term is shorter, he will be a lame duck the minute he is sworn in and he has a lot of people around him, the people that stayed in the government after january 6 who are second and third graders at best. trump will assist in staffing a second term on personal loyalty to him above all. he is coming up on his decision for his vp nominee and the two questions on the interview form are do you think the 2020 election was stolen and if i told you in a similar situation to do what i told mike pence to do, would you do it? unless the answers to both questions are yes that person will not be considered. you will see something similar in virtually all key positions. that is a dangerous circumstance. to the extent the republicans in the senate take the process seriously, if they see people were loyal to trump than the constitution, that alone is grounds to vote against them. is there a specific person close to him now that you are worried about? i would not want to give any of them academy awards. i think there are bright people that have joined this cult of personality. the smarter they are, the more dangerous they are. you are giving us serious warnings, something i am going to say is not that serious is a right in vote. this election will be biden or trump, in 2020 you wrote in cheney, you said you would do it again. are you giving a clear and honest warning if you are willing to do another right in that will not help anything? i bought that argument in 2016 when hillary ran against trump and i voted for trump in 2016. hillary and bill were a year ahead of me in law school and i would like to say i have been burdened with them longer than the rest of the country but after working for trump i could not good for him but i did not vote for biden in 2020 and will not this year because i do not think he is fit to be president for different reasons. when you have two people that do not cross the bar of acceptability, i think is legitimate to cast a protest vote. a year ago i heard a lot of republicans say they will not vote for trump but they look at biden and they decide to vote for the lesser of two evils. it is a unhappy time for america when these are the two people we nominated and it will be a bad four years for america no matter who wins. then are these concerns really serious? no, he is not talking about his son, he is talking about the guy running against him for the presidency. hunter is taking care of his business and he has another case he has to deal with just as trump is taking care of his business and has 3-4 other cases to deal with. it is smart politics to call the thing what it is. obviously she is a convicted felon. our friends on this network counted each count, 1-34. for the biden team is a opportunity for them to lean into the politics. this is a political campaign. what candidate in the world would not use this kind of weakness that is self-imposed by his opponent? my response is, to each his own but at a certain point it has to become about the country. going back to your discussion with bolton, the reality is, this is a big deal. you have a individual that is running for president who says he wants to be a dictator. in the annals of our country that is not what we do or have done. we may have had some folks who danced with this idea back in the 30s and in the 50s but leaders in this country and ultimately the american people said to with that. that is not who we are. i am not forsaking the future of my kids and grandkids to a fool who wants to be a dictator because i know what history has taught me about dictatorships. so at a certain point the paul ryan s and john bolton s may sit there and go i cannot do that but what i am asking my fellow republicans to do is think about the country for once. think about the bigger issue, the future of your kids and the importance of this. there are a lot of things about biden s policies i can disagree with all day long but they are not a threat to my freedom, my family or my future. i can get up and have that fight with the administration, i cannot have that fight with doug s knocking on my door sent by a dictator. there are important points to be made about the selection, i think that is one of them. i hope paul ryan and others will come around. at the end of the day, what they do in the privacy of the voting booth is their business despite what they say publicly. i am guessing right now mitch mcconnell is tucked in his bed nodding and agreeing with everything michael is saying but in public he will be welcoming trump later this week along with fellow senate republicans. how would this go? i am not seeing that as much, i am seeing the headline but i am not hearing that when i talk to ceos. i work with over 300 fortune 500 companies and they are not pulling back. as a result over last year s pride and the situation over bud light they are integrating pride into the every day, versus pleading all of their eggs into one basket in june. so i am seeing a increase in commitment. i will tell you why that is. they understand the next generation is lgbtq, 30%. 80% of the next generation identify as allies to the community. so if you are a consumer business in america you need to step up your support to the community and they realize that. what they are trying to do is do it in thoughtful ways. thoughtful is the key word here, how much does misinformation fuel all of this? i have seen people say why on earth does pride get a whole month? we have months the support african americans, women s, disability rights, where does the misinformation come from that makes lgbtq a target of things that are not based in truth? verdicts for hunter biden on all three counts against him making him the first child of a sitting us president to be convicted of a crime the wife of us supreme court justice samuel alito s secretly just moments ago from a un commission finds israeli authorities and palestinian militant groups, including mass responsible for war crimes and other violations of international law. the commission has also found israel responsible for crimes against humanity during its military operations in gaza following the october 7 hamas attack. i want to bring in cnn s jumana karachi, who joins us live from london. thanks for being the un says it has evidenced at both israel and hamas have committed war crimes or report just handed down to mount. and what can you tell us? well, linda, this is a these are the findings of the un commission of inquiry on the palestinian territories and israel, this is a body that was set up by the united nations human rights council back in 2021 during the offensive in gaza at the time. and now for the past few months, they have been investigating the events of october 7 and events since they have released to reports, 200 pages long in total so with their findings on both what is happening in gaza during these military operations, as well as what took place in israel on october the seventh. and what they say here is that they have found hamas and six other palestinian armed groups it s responsible for war crimes committed in israel. and they also found that, as you mentioned, that they accused israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during its military operations in gaza. now this linda, they say, is the first in-depth un investigation into the events of october 7 and events since they accused israel of obstructing their investigations, not giving them access to israel or palestinian territories, but they say that this investigation relied on interviews with victims and witnesses. they went through thousands of open source item is that they verified, they say through advanced forensic analysis, they had hundreds of submissions satellite imagery, forensic medical reports. now, when it comes to october the seventh, linda, these are the main findings. they say that these militant groups, hamas and these other groups are responsible for the for war crimes including intentionally directing attacks against civilians murder or willful killing, torture, taking hostages, including children and more. now, these crimes, they say, we re committed by these militant groups as well as palestinians. they say in some instances, in civilian clothing, they identify they say patron s indicative of sexual violence. and concluded that these are not isolated incidents, but perpetrated in similar ways in several locations primarily against israeli women. and the indiscriminate firing of thousands of projectiles against israeli towns and cities. they say that causing deaths and injuries is a violation of international humanitarian and human rights law. then you ve got the report on what is happening and what has happened in gaza during these military operations, there accusing israel of these war crimes and crimes against humanity, including you including using starvation as a method of warfare, murder, and willful killing intentionally directing attacks against civilians, sexual violence extermination, gender, persecution of palestinian men and boys, murder forcible transfer and the list goes on. what they say is when you look at the immense number of civilian casualties in gaza, the widespread destruction they say that this is the result of what they have found to be a strategy to cause maximum damage, disregarding the rules of war, the principles of distinction shin proportionality, an adequate precautions. and what they say is the intentional use of heavy weapons with a large destructive capacity in densely populated areas. they say that you know, all these evacuation orders that the israeli authorities have issued, that that was not adequate, that that was not enough. that they found that civilians as well came under attack when taking these evacuation routes or in designated safe areas and then they go into the humanitarian situation where they say they have found to be a total siege of gaza imposed by israel. and they say that this as what they found here to be the use of the weaponization of aid and access to gaza. saying that this was what is happening amounts to punishment. collective punishment against the civilian population and they also found instances they say a significant number of civilians who posed no threat intentionally killed by israeli forces. and in these cases, linda, we have to mention that they mentioned, they cite to reports that were reported by us at cnn over the past few months. now we have now reached out to the israeli government for comment. but it s worth mentioning here that they have made their position very clear on this commission. they said that they are not going to cooperate with them months ago. accusing this body of being an anti-israel and anti-semitic body, they have had issues with members of the commission. and of course, this is coming we ve seen the tensions rising, the relationship deteriorated between the united name nations and israel over the past during the conflict, as much as israel has come under criticism for its military operations in gaza, it has accused the united nations and several of its bodies and of an anti israel bias and not being fair towards israel. so they re fighting it. the israel-lebanon border is continuing to intensified is take us through this escalation yeah i mean, what we re what we re seeing is real intensification overnight, there was israel is telling, saying israeli officials are saying that hamas is rejected. hamas has responded saying, no, we haven t rejected it. in fact, is a rich pays a member of hamas is politburo is saying the palestinian factions have responded positively and seriously to the proposal and are accusing israeli media of incitement and attempting to confuse the situation. it s a bit like when you re bargaining in the soup just because you reject a price doesn t necessarily mean you re not going to buy the goods. this is a bargaining, this is negotiations. so at this point, i think both sides are accusing the other of rejecting it, but i don t think we can say that the deal is dead yet. it s just bargaining and we will continue to see what comes out of the next round of mediation band conviction on three federal felony gun charges the president braced his son off to landing and delaware hours after tuesday s verdict, the jury deliberated for less than three hours concluding that hunter biden violated laws meant to prevent those suffering from substance abuse from buying or owning a firearm and of course, it created an awkward political moment for the us president who just hours after his sons conviction, was speaking at a previously scheduled gun safety event harold, in his efforts to strengthen gumballs and enhance the penalties for those who violate them. well, let s discuss this where the riva martin and attorney and legal affairs commentator, she joins us from los angeles. good to have you with us hi. sorry. i had to buy it and found guilty of three felonies lying to a licensed firearms gun deal. i m making a false claim and a firearms application. and of course, possessing that illegally obtained gun for those 11 days he does face up to 25 years in prison. but could get a fraction of that. what do you anticipate well, one thing we do know is that hunter biden does not have any prior felony or any kinds of convictions on his record he didn t use the gun that he purchased for any crime, so no crime was committed with bad gun. he has been according to reports, clean and sober now for at least four or five years, given that he is likely to demonstrate a great deal of remorse, given the types of mitigation letters and testimony that we will see from supporters and friends. i think he ll get the lowest sentence possible, and i think it s so important to note that this case, the case that was brought against hunter biden several former prosecutors who had been in charge of us attorney s offices said this is not the kind of case that they would have even brought so i think we can t overlook a gloss over the political aspect of this prosecution. so i don t expect there to be any sentence in the range. what s being reported with respect to the 25 years, i think it ll be at the lowest end of the sentencing range yeah. an array that just on that point, as you alluded to people at the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives, did apparently say that anyone else would have seen these these charges dropped with this case drop if he wasn t as well-known, just how unusual is it for someone we know criminal record to go to court for an offense like this it s very unusual. i saw some statistic that you ve talked about less than three to 5% of individuals in this situation would have ever had charges brought. and even if charges were brought most likely this was the kind of case they would have resulted in a plea deal, not the kind of case that would have occupied the time and resources that we saw the government put forth and you can t help again, but look at all of the personal and very embarrassing information that was revealed during this trial, it seemed like the trial was about embarrassing hunter biden and therefore embarrassing the entire biden family more so than seeking justice, i was quite surprised. i should say, at the outcome at the verdict by the jury, i thought there would be jury nullification. i thought the jury would look at this and say this just doesn t pass the smell test. there s something blatantly unfair about this prosecution but they looked at the facts and said they put aside of the reality that this was the president s son. and reach their conclusion. and like democrats have been saying throughout the day you have to accept the verdict the jury, and i m prepared to do that, but i was surprised by it of course hunter biden does face and other trial in september over his failure to pay his income taxes during a years-long crack alcohol spending binge. should that case b. of more concern to him? woke absolutely much much more serious case of very easy to prove cases where there are allegations of failure to pay federal income taxes the allegations here is that he failed to pay over $1 million over a three-year period. but i think we re going to see something happened in the tax evasion in case based on what we saw in the case that just resulted in the conviction, and that s probably a lot of testimony about his drug use, about his addiction that probably had something to do played some role in why he did not pay his federal taxes. again, this is the case linda that ordinarily would have been resolved by plea deal and remember, there was a deal that was interred into by the special prosecutor and biden s attorneys that would have allowed for both the cases, the gun charge case, and the tax case to be resolved without going to trial. and so given that it is going to go to trial, the second case in september does tuesday s guilty verdict potentially raise the stakes for any future sentencing? absolutely. yeah. again, i don t think he has much jeopardy when it comes to the convictions today, the nature of the charges, that is what we need to hear as well as from the countries. how do they view the boss response? president joe biden put forward a us back proposal 13 days ago hamas finally responded yesterday according to a source familiar with the talks, they offered some amendments to the proposal israel, according to an israeli official view that as a rejection of the proposal, but it s unclear how blinken the country s the egyptians, the crucial negotiators here view that and whether there s a path forward, that is what we hope to to learn, or whether once again, this entire effort has fallen apart when it comes down to the details as it has so many times before. meanwhile, in the midst of this blinken diplomatic flurry throughout the region, the un has issued a report of the first months of the war the most in-depth investigation carried out by the the un commission of inquiry to this point. and it concludes that both israel and palestinian militant groups, including hamas, have committed war crimes and violated national humanitarian law at the beginning of the war, the investigation looks at october 7 to december 31st, the end of last year. so the first two-and-a-half months and in it, the un concludes the both israel and palestinian militant groups carried out acts of torture committed sexual violence and intentionally attacks civilians. the findings are based on interviews with witnesses, victims media reports, as well as open in source material that they were able to verify. perhaps not surprisingly, the hamas portion of the investigation focused on october 7, and that is where the un found that hamas intentionally targeted civilians, carried out acts of murder and torture, outrageous upon personal dignity, dignity, and taking hostages, including children. now it has to be noted that the un found that israel has in systemic and widespread way targeted civilians in its campaign in gaza. and it s bombardment of gaza. israel did not cooperate an experienced judge who didn t play any games. she was as fair to the defense as she was to the prosecution so quite a different sort of tone there over the exact same verdict from a jury of their peers. but then you go into further into the right-wing media sphere and you get something else, you get what they say is essentially a larger conspiracy theory, even though this was a guilty verdict. here is right-wing talk show host early kirk in a tweet, he says, hunter biden, guilty. jan, the true crimes of the biden crime family remain untouched. this is a fake trial trying to make the justice system appear balanced, don t fall for it. this is also something that donald trump campaign tout. it s pushing the conspiracy theory that president biden has taken money from foreign governments and that this whole trial was just to try to cover up for it, tried to give something to take away from what they say is a larger, unfounded conspiracy theory in this sunday of that donald trump junior also spouting in a live conversation on x saying it s not even close to justice, saying it s trying to create the illusion of equal justice under the law. and this goes to show you how the far fringes of the protein trump media world. they have drifted into just sort of automatic conspiracy theories that the default is a conspiracy theory when the do s does not justify their point of view that this morning in their playbook where you had both democrats and republicans saying the quiet part out loud when it comes to the hunter biden trial in mat, i want to go to you first with jason wrote like a republican strategist two does real republican campaign says, quote, it throws a bit of sand in the gears of people s suggesting the biden department of justice has been engineered to go after trump. we have this. i think we re going to graph pick it up one feature of the modern republican party is ignoring facts that don t support the argument in sometimes embracing the conspiracy theories that do what about that? although it can be, i know we just played the two clips from fox news, but i imagined if i wasn t watching msnbc last night because of course i was watching cnn. but if we had, i got to match them just noticeably more quiet than it would ve been two weeks ago after the conviction, new york. and so look, both sides are going to play the politics it s the way they feel they need to on this. clearly the trump campaign s going to try to highlight the inadequacy they felt in their case and downplay what happened yesterday, the same way you re hearing pretty much silence outside of a pretty basic statement out from the white house yesterday about hunter biden s conviction yesterday here s the truth of it. all this race between donald trump and joe biden right now. so static that both of these have had relatively little impact on the actual results of any poll right now, this election at the end of the de is gonna be decided by a very, very, very narrow set of swing voters. and those swing voters are likely going to say the talks and all their houses, they ve already disapproval, both candidates, this just adds to that fire are going to ultimately vote on what they believe is in the best interests for them and their families in november. and i think the first campaign to recognize that and grab onto that is likely going to be the candidate that wins in november i will say the reaction for most democrats has been respect the rule of law and to the trump verdict, it was respect the rule of law. and with republicans, the response to the trump verdict was outraged and the response to that hunter biden verdict is conspiracy. there is a vast difference here in those reactions. i do want to ask you, chuck joe crowley, if former congressman from new york, it as far as making a statement, democrats saying the quiet part out loud says, quote, it s the silver lining. they weren t looking for maybe suggesting in some ways this helps president biden in his reelection i think that it s distinguishable because the younger biden is not the president. and so what you get to see is joe biden be a caring father for a son who had a substance abuse program who was in one of those who i think gets sympathy, people always run to their corners on the right or the left and that tried a small group of folks would decide the outcome. but when you can personalize the president, whose demagogue on the right all the time because of his age or anything else they can find and he can become more human as a political consultant who runs campaigns every single day those are the little moments i m looking for when a president can be more human and not just this thing that we see on the news all day long or i want to get your reaction to something that paul i think we have the paul ryan sound all so do we have paul ryan talking on fox? we don t have paul ryan. well, paul ryan, the former speaker of the house, went on fox news, matt yesterday and said the types of things that paul ryan has really said, frankly, since 2020, he said that donald trump isn t fit to be president. and he said it right on fox news for many conservative viewers to hear this upset i should say, supporters of donald trump, including congressmen troy nehls, listen to what he said paul ryan, you re a piece of garbage. you re a piece of garbage. and we should kick you out of the party for paul ryan to say he s not vote for donald trump. that s the problem with some of our republicans. its guys like that. don t go spout in your mouth often, same euro conservative. your spit in the face of the leader of our party, donald trump. i m grow up a little bit doesn t really sound like big ten. they re mad no. i mean, look, if you you mentioned that this foot paul ryan been saying since 2020, that s been made, been saying it publicly since 2020, but it s essentially what he s been saying even privately since 2016. and there s been a literal books written on on that, so i don t think this really comes as much of a surprise to anyone. there are certainly going to be a sliver of the party which is going to say they re knocking support donald trump as the nominee. and what s going to be interesting by nicely looking at polling every single day what i m looking for is, which can t is going to be able to hold onto the larger share of their own party, going november, it s amazing, despite talks like this, despite discussions at division and the republican party, despite high profile republicans saying they want support doctrine, he still maintains actually much stronger course of work from registered republican voters than joe biden does from democratic voters. and that just gets the core of one, the bigger political challenges for the white house right now now is that it s upwards of over 20% of their core based right now, it s saying they may not support joe biden or donald trump is holding almost anywhere between 85 to 90% of his own party right now. so despite paul ryan basically saying ways been saying for almost a decade now, not much has changed that i ll trump s still as of today as a stronger fold on the republic welcome party than joe biden does on the democratic party. and that s why you re seeing in the head impulse right now? yeah. chuck, what about matt s point there? paul ryan saying what he says, who does that actually convince well i would push back on that just a little bit. we ve had elections last night in ohio and every tuesday we ve had an election and all these states were republican primary motors got to pick on who they wanted and about 80% have picked trump to his point but 20% of pick nikki haley, who ain t even running for president no more. so i wouldn t say he s got that consolidated. we got our own problems with democrats but our base is pretty secure with joe biden s one has been getting about 90 or 95% and what do you see for paul ryan represents a lot of common sense economic driven republicans in the suburb who were sick and tired. of donald trump. there was a primary internationally, a special election in ohio yesterday, ohio s sixth congressional district in a district any trump won by like 29 points where the heavily finance republican candidate, one. but by around ten points or even a little bit less, any source of concern there, matt no. i mean, look, yeah, you re seeing a bit of a juxtaposition compared to special elections almost ten years ago, republicans traditionally have had habitual voters on their side, older voters, voters with college degrees. lately, those are two groups have been shifting to democratic party while the republican party is doing much better with voters without college degrees and even younger voters who are much harder to turn out in a special election scenario like we saw in ohio yesterday. i think you re going to see likely a republican carry that district again by 20 plus points in the november general election. it is an interesting dichotomy though you go back just a few cycles ago. chuck and i probably on opposite pages about looking at these special election results. it is the scenario right now we re republicans are doing better in presidential elections because they re pulling out different voters who may not show up outside of the big, the big show every four years. now, there is really something happening interesting in the special luncheon with the high and low propensity voters there. thanks for pointing it out that mauer is great to see you chuck wrote that culture as always nice to see you as well right now, president biden is headed to italy ahead of the g7 summit. big issues on the agenda, of course, include the israel hamas war, the war in ukraine, the impact we were together just yesterday in jordan, had a conference to work to rally more international support to address the dire humanitarian crisis in gaza. qatar has already shown remarkable generosity states too. the palestinians that brings the total amount that we ve provided to $670 million in additional us assistance to the yeah. palestinians any eight months that this war has been going on we ve long been the leading provider of support to palestinians. and we we will continue to do everything we can to support them particularly in this time of need we re also continuing to work every single day on it pre-seen the flow of assistance into gaza and making sure that it gets to people who need it within gaza working to improve civilian protection working to secure the release of hostages now single, most effective and most immediate way to end the suffering of people in gaza to end the suffering of palestinians and israelis alike to tackle the humanitarian assistance crisis, to prevent the conflict from, further escalating and spreading to other places is to get ceasefire that allows us to get to work toward a more durable end to the conflict here again qatar has been tireless partner in the prime minister personally, a tireless partner in working to mediate a ceasefire and a hostage release something that the prime minister and i first discussed here on october 13th and many times since 12 days ago president biden s set out a ceasefire proposal rooted in core principles of releasing all the hostages surging assistance into gaza guaranteeing israel security providing a path to an enduring and to war. and starting the massive reconstruction for gaza the entire world almost without fail has been behind this proposal and we heard it again and again and again. individual countries pronouncing themselves in support in this region and beyond. important groups like the g7, the honorably palestinian authority israel and of course just two days ago, the united nations security council leaders in the region that i ve met with over the last couple of days they have reaffirmed that. again and again and again so we re waiting on one response and that was the response it s from hamas and as the prime minister said, last night, we received a response hamas has proposed numerous changes to the posel that was on the table. we discussed those changes last night with a different colleagues and today with the prime minister some of the changes are workable. some are not here in a nutshell is where we stand a deal was on the table that was virtually identical to proposal that hamas before on may the sixth a deal that the entire world is behind a deal israel is accepted hamas could have answered with a single word yes instead hamas weighted nearly two weeks and then propose more changes a number of which go beyond positions that had previously taken an accepted as a result, you heard the prime minister say this the war that hamas started on october 7. but this barbaric attack on israel and on israeli civilians we ll go on more people will suffer. palestinians will suffer more, israelis will suffer but in the days ahead we are going to continue to push on an urgent basis with our partners with qatar with egypt to try to close this deal. because we know it s in the interests of israelis, palestinians. the region indeed, the entire world and we all three that the deal has to be grounded in the principles at the ceasefire proposal that the entire international community supports there s something nelson s critical and the prime minister alluded to it it s also crucial that we get from the immediate ceasefire that we re working personally to achieve to an enduring end and in order to do that and to do that effectively we have to have plans for the day after the conflict ganzen, gaza, and we need to have them as soon as possible for months. we ve been working with partners throughout the region on such a plan and that was also key focus conversations i ve had over the last couple of days in the coming weeks, we will put forward proposals for key elements of the day after plan, including concrete ideas for how to manage governance security reconstruction that plan is key to turning a ceasefire into an enduring end to the conflict. but also turning an end of war into a just and durable peace. and using that he s using that piece as a foundation for building a more integrated more stable more prosperous region over the course of but what s now my eighth visit to the region since october 7 everyone that i ve engaged with has made clear that this is the path they want to pursue. now i can t speak for hamas or answer for hamas and ultimately, it may not be the path that hamas wants to pursue. but hamas cannot and will not be allowed to decide the future for this region that s people enough dialogue and majorly less. so i lower zero on had known have numbering connected jazeera what we ve just been listening to is secretary of state tony blinken can he in doha and these are his first remarks. first real response since they have received the response from hamas to the hostage and ceasefire proposal has now been on the table. the reaction from tony blinken important. he says that hamas in its response proposed numerous changes. some are workable, some are not. he says tony blinken, though, making very clear that this is on hamas at this point because he went into detail on how many nations, how many regions of the world have come together to agree and support this proposal? just this week, the un in security council giving its endorsement to this proposal, the g7, the arrow league, israel, all saying yes to this proposal. and tony blinken saying hamas could have ended this essentially and start to bring about to bring an end to the suffering with a simple yes but now more changes are being proposed and asked for requested and demanded by hamas for this to come to an end. we re going to continue to cover this, but this is an important development in what has now in what is now been this kind of waiting period to see what was going to come and how much hope to put behind this proposal better than we saw at the month prior. it is also better than expectations. so we like to see that when you look at cpi on a monthly basis, this is where the real good news cause this is where the gift is 0% remaining unchanged on a monthly basis, right? so the index pretty much remaining flat. the last it s how we saw this, you d have to go all the way back to july, i think of 2022. so you certainly like to see that. i want to talk really quickly about sectors on a monthly basis because this gives you a sense of where prices are still rising and where they re falling. so shelter which has been really stubborn shelter, you think the price to put a roof over your head, think about rent. you think about there s a component for mortgages. so that increased again on a monthly basis and food slightly increased. but as you can see on this graphic here, just so slightly on the other hand, we saw prices fall for gas in a pretty big way. we saw prices fall for apparel as well, and airline fares also came down. so the reason why this is really important in general, but certainly on a day like today when we re getting hit with a double whammy effect of economic event is it just gives us a sense, not just of where prices have been, but also where rates are going. and when we hear from jay powell, the federal reserve chairman, and about six hours from now, we don t expect this softer inflation report to necessarily change what we hear from him, then we re not expecting a rate cut. this meeting, but perhaps now that we re getting more welcoming inflation data, maybe that means a rate cut. maybe later this summer, maybe early this fall, which after the string of inflation reports that we have been getting, that we re actually hotter than expected that was even a big question. so for change, i come with some are better than expected news, inflation cooling for the month of may, we ll wait a few hours to hear what j power has to say about this. i m sure he will find extreme measures of heat risk as we go into monday. now this is a new map, a new product that we have that s with the national weather service and the cdc to convey his sickness and heat risk when you re looking at the symptoms of heat sickness, you re looking at maybe dizziness, headaches, some cool and pale skin. is that could be a sign of heat exhaustion. you want to watch out for that if it gets worse, you could even be working at unconsciousness and confusion for symptoms of heat stroke. so these are things that we need to watch out for. again we ve had this extreme pete pretty early in the season. so you ll want to make sure that you re looking at exercising either early or late to avoid that pq, you wanna wear lightweight, light-colored closed drink lots of water. remember to check on children, elderly and pads, and remember that these cards could get incredibly hot. it only takes minutes for these cars two get to a level that can be deadly. now, heat is the biggest tell you this is big news because you re talking about some 13 million members who are part of this church organization. and what we know, the 10,000 members will be having that discussion today. there will be a debate something that will be monitoring throughout day. but what we know is almost 47,000 churches are linked to this association. on top of that, women working in pastoral roles at about 100 churches. and this could affect black church across the country. but one of the things that people want to talk about is the fact that supporters believe this is biblically necessary. listened to to pastors talk about this breakdown and why this vote could go one way today women have had a prominent role within the ministry and pastoral positions within the leadership of first alexandria for over 44 years first alexandria stands before you today as a testament that we can maintain a fruitful partnership with churches. the take a different stance on women and ministry we find no joy in making this recommendation, but have formed the opinion that the churches egalitarian beliefs regarding the office of pastor do not closely identify what the conventions adopted statement of faith yeah. john, obviously i said we will still monitor this throughout the day last year that preliminary vote was cast and it looked like this will pass. sometimes they now again, like i said, this could affect 100, hundreds of churches. they ll have to make the decision how they want to move forward. but something we should also say, this is in their constitution, the doctrine actually states that only men can be pastors at one church. you had women pastors only doing their pasturing to women and children. so there s big discussions about how this breakdown will happen, how it will move forward, especially in this changing, changing landscape across the country when it comes to people going to church. but this debate will happen today. the vote should happen later on, and we ll bring it to you john alright, ryan young. thanks very much. kate joining us right now is referencing victoria rob powers. she s the first female senior pastor at the royal lane baptist church in texas. reverend, thanks for being here and just to bring everyone up to speed, your congregation is an autonomous baptist church, not affiliated with a southern baptist convention but your experience is so important here because this is not the first time a church has been ejected from the southern baptist convention over female pastors why do you think they are doubling down on this? yeah that s right. thanks for having me i think one of the reasons why they re doubling down on this is because they re trying to maintain power. i mean, studies show that to maintain power, you have to constantly exert power. i think they re doing this in an effort to exert power. the irony is the southern baptist convention is losing power because it s losing influence. a decision like this will inevitably lead to the disfellowship of hundreds of churches, which means the convention will significantly dwindle and size rafat, this feels very strange to ask, but i shall, which is have you ever witnessed any negative impacts? of having a female pastor in a church yeah. i actually grew up in the southern baptist convention, which is funny that you should ask that. and as i, as you mentioned earlier, royal lane is not part of the southern baptist convention, but we were in fact we left the convention in the early 90s because of their discrimination of women and ministry. so in many ways what we re seeing is not new. the convention has a long history of excluding women administrate, especially from leadership roles. i think the point i was trying to make have you ever seen having a female pastor leader church and a senior role that it s been a problem for a church in terms of actual spiritual faith and leading a congregation for separate from its connection to the, to the convention sure. thanks for that clarification. no. i haven t seen that. i mean, i think our church in particular has seen a lot of fruitful ministry from the result of having a female and a pulpit. it s also helpful to just expand the number of voices that we hear from. so to. choose to only reserve the office of pastor for men is to limit ministry and limit the possibilities of what god can do the reverend, we heard the reverend of the man who is leading the alexandria church. his name s robert stevens speaking there saying this is a sad moment for us. but we also recognize that god has a future for first baptist church. and i had read, used speaking to, i believe as a local community newspaper earlier this year and talking about women women in clergy and the impact and you say often i tell people, you can t be what you can t see what does this movement from egalitarian beliefs mean for young kids growing up in the southern baptist churches all over the country right now yeah. i can t help but think about all those young girls in these churches who will never know what s possible for them. because as you said, you can t be what you can t see. so it s disheartening to think about the ways in which we re limiting their imaginations but i actually remain hopeful because if my religious experience tells me anything it s that god is bigger than the walls we tried to put around god. so i m confident this won t be the last word for women in baptist life i wanted to ask you if you could speak with the clergy of the first baptist church in alexandria today, what would your message be? reverend yeah, i would tell them to keep going to be courageous in their prophetic witness and to remember that there are many examples of women and leadership throughout the bible of a southern baptist just convention likes to hold that the office of pastor is reserved for men alone. and at that somehow is qualified by scripture. but that s just not true. we see women in leadership roles across the bible as they serve as judges, prophets, apostles, the first witnesses to the resurrection were women. so we wouldn t even have a church today if it weren t for women. so i would tell them to press on to keep going and to remember that if the son of god can come from the womb of a woman, then surely the word of god can come from her mouth now that is a perfect note to end on a convicted his surviving son on all three federal gun charges. it is the first time in american history that an immediate family member of a sitting us president was convicted of a crime. now the moment, of course, creates the split-screen of conservatives who just 12 days ago were slamming the rule of law, slamming the judge, the jury, and the verdict in donald trump s manhattan trial some even claimed the conviction was the end of the republicans. we know it but tonight, they seem to be singing from a completely different tune this is a new error in america, and i think it goes against the elc of who we are as americans and our faith in the criminal justice system in the end, this juror, jury of ordinary people from delaware, we re not intimidated and by that family and they recognize that this was a clear cut case and that clearly no one is above the law. this is a very political exercise. and you have to say that it accomplish what it set out to accomplish. but i would say this abet judge noreika, i think she ran a very fair courtroom. she ran a very fair brian, i guess we all need to shop at banana republic from now on because that s what it feels like. yeah, a banana republic for years, the bikes have been able to escape any legal accountability for their sleazy corrupt conduct but today they re luck ran out, at least hunters did. power is all they love. and they re willing to do anything to cling to it. they re willing to destroy the rule of law the republic has been wounded by week lawyers and talent less political bloodhounds gave me a little boost of confidence in the american legal system although they still have a lot of work to do to win me back, i believe that there was a conscious collusion of allies that came together it s pretty obvious with a private strategy to eliminate a common shared adversary, a hundreds going to jail. so joe doesn t have to and when he comes out, he ll be rewarded for his loyalty, like a made man and a biden crime family. this is a distraction from the influence, peddling and the kickbacks yes. these are two different trials under very different circumstances. hunter biden was federal trump s was not the crimes and the evidence all completely different. but you can t claim the justice system is dead because of a single conviction, while also praising it for another you can t claim president biden is weaponizing the justice department to go after his enemies. when that same department just convicted his own son but in a world of maga, perhaps you can prominent conservatives are trading baseless conspiracies, for another now they re claiming that hunter biden s trial was a sham to give cover to biden. charlie kirk. kirk says the democrats will use the conviction to claim that the system is fair. vivek ramaswamy, he calls it a smokescreen to deflect attention from biden s other crimes republican senator tom cotton says, it s a way to insulate joe biden who is guilty of corruption trump s campaign calls the case a distraction from the quote biden crime family. now remember, this is the same biden that conservatives claim can t walk, can t talk or think on his own but just so we re clear, biden has no power over a state-level prosecution but the same federal government that he actually runs just prosecuted his own son and the system we re supposed to believe is rate that just makes no sense we re gonna get to all of that in a moment. but first, tonight joining me now is reverend dr. christopher bolick. he is a spiritual advisor to light and family and the pastor at canaan baptist church in new castle, delaware. reverend, thank you for being with us. it s good to be with you, abby. god bless you. thank you for having me. thank you for being here. you spoke last night or before this verdict, i should say, with hunter biden how was he when you last spoke with him? he was upbeat. he was positive and but he understood the gravity of the situation and the nature of the trial. so he is well aware of what the possibilities where uncertainty disappointed in the verdict. however, things did not go on his favor does not mean that the favor of god is not a ban him. we believe that his faith is strong course is family is strong and width him. and i encouraged him to look to the heel from what s come at this help? all of his help coming from the lord. but he s focused and we know that things are going to work out in the end a hunter biden has talked about his addiction. he s talked about what that has been like for his life, but i wonder on this particular issue or the set of issues that he was charged, it has now been convicted of has he ever expressed remorse for what led to all of this? i believe that he s aware of every step of his journey and remorse is a part of the process therefore, he is prepared to move forward knowing that god is a forgiving god he has said in his own words that he has hurt people along the wake but we know that the power of prayer, the power family, the power of faith can change him and any situation listen, abbe this addiction issue is a disease this impacted millions of americans regardless of race, creed, or color, phd, no, d, g, d, md jd. this disease is real. and we know that it s a journey and it s a season in his life and this season will hopefully in, in a way in which we ve been endured for night, but joy will come in the next season i cnn spoke earlier today with one of the jurors in this case. juror number ten, i want to play for you. what he said about the defense i felt i felt bad that they put naomi on trial on witness i i think that was probably a strategy that should not have been done no. no daughter should ever have to testify or again, sir, dad you know, this family wow. was it a mistake for the defense to put a hunters own daughter through that i think they had to make some critical decisions. they had a particular strategy and they were going for what would work for them, what would give them favor in the face of the jury at all? the judge at all who are concerned. it was painful. but we understand that the fence had a strategy. they believe it would work. and we know that this family, again it has gone through was going through a lot and at the end of the day, it s all about what s in the best interests of hunter and the biden family we saw those emotional images of president biden hugging his only surviving son can you tell us what this has been like for him going through this trial? a different kind of trial compared to some of the other trials that he s gone through in his life with the loss of his late wife and several of his other children president, my friend and brother is a man of resilience. a man of deep faith a, man who understands the hand of god when god s hand moves in, his life. and he said that, let justice play out and whatever the decision was of the jewelry, he would respect and accept the decision. but when i saw him come home tonight and embraced his son i saw the power of love let me say this. abby love is greater than politics the bible says, loves the more excellent way love indu, with all things, believes all things love is patient. love is kind and the script it talks about that. nothing can separate us from the love of god, the love of god is in that family our president and first lady. they love onto and we love him and we will continue to walk alongside him with the ministry of presence. my role has been the past of presence in the courtroom. we prayed three times in the courtroom. we brought the church house to the courthouse. we prayed openly we prayed, we hugged, and he knows the power of prayer and god always has the last word. and i just think something good is going to come out of this in the that someone happens to be the president. and for the president to say, i m not putting my finger on the scale for this one. i m not i don t even want to talk about it. i can t imagine how you do that. i can t imagine as a parent, how you disassociate from that. and i think that will look very noble and good to a lot of democratic voters. there s also a possibility that this completely doesn t matter to voters at all yeah i m one of the people who thinks it doesn t really matter to voters. hunter biden is not running for president and i don t know if that s a newsblaster. anyway, but donald trump was convicted and he is running for president hunter biden is a son of a candidate for president and the president himself refused as estee pointed, to, put his thumb on the scale of justice. he refused to intervene, he refused to stop the prosecution, refused to condemn the judge and jury. he refused to promise to pardon hunter biden after the conviction that s a stark and dramatic contrast from everything adopted. trump has done since donald trump has been on trial attacking everybody involved in his trial. okay. let me play this from the speaker of the house, mike johnson. he was asked by our own manu raju about the way that republicans are responding to a hunter biden versus how they dealt with donald trump. listen mr. speaker, you ve been saying two tier system of justice for some time. here s the president s son being convicted on three counts. that undercut your client. it doesn t every cases different and clearly the evidence is overwhelming here. i don t think that s the case and the trump trials and all the of charges that have been brought against could have been obviously brought for political purposes. a hunter biden as a separate instance that s a separate instance, but the other thing about the hunter biden is that this is not the only hunter biden trial. we ll see. there will be another one. it come this fall. so are we going to go through the motions again? i m saying everything hot? that happens to hunter is aboveboard. anything that happens to trump is not i think that the way that we should think about this is to try to get ourselves as individual consumers out of the non-stop political consideration. let s look for the republicans. there s at least one thomas massie. i saw him do this in congress today. say this is ridiculous. he, let s, we shouldn t be convicting someone and sending him to 25 years in prison for doing one thing, he lied on an application. there s no victim in this crime. there s no victim and trump s crime either, right? so if we we have a sickness of in the criminal justice system in this country, we have so many people in jail. we have so many victimless crimes. harvey solar relate the great civil libertarian writer has had a book called three felonies a day. that s the average that us very law-abiding citizens on this panel commit everyday because there s so much in the criminal code. right. so that puts everything up to the discretion. question of prosecutors. and we re sitting around and if we re republican, we cheered hunter biden getting locked up or a convicted for democrat would share donald trump, i say as americans, let s work back. is there a victim if there s not, let s stop sharing i listen. i m glad it for ones we are talking about the ways in which perhaps this country over criminalizes people, 20 people in prison. i just never thought that it would come up because of donald trump and hunter biden. but let me just as a gun owner. okay it s a crime to lie on a gun application for a reason. and there could have been a victim to this crime that s why you don t lie on a form or purchase a firearm. there wasn t that s lucky. but it s bad for every law abiding gun owner when people break the law in an attempt to buy a gun. i mean, i think that should have been i understand both your points, but i thought the point matt was making surprise. i agree with you and this is that even if we think that that hunter biden did something wrong, he broke the law which the jury found that he did maybe we shouldn t be putting him in jail for them. i m not sure if that s incorrect, but that s what i ve seen. i think and i think trump voter one of the major reasons is they feel like this economy is terrible and inflation has been bad for them personally. well, i think the reality is that because people s wages have increased faster than actual inflation has increased, people have a stronger economic position and they would be otherwise we also know that more people have jobs 15.6 million people have jobs now for the african american community, we ve had the lowest black unemployment rate in history. we also complaining about that. no you re not playing. i know i advantage right now of a little bit less than ten percentage points. so this could be trumped two for two on the evening. and of course, trump s so far has not lost a single race in which he s endorsed into their the congressional sayyed of the group and notorious but one other interesting house race that i m going to take you to. we re going to go away from the south and we re gonna go to the north. we re gonna go to ohio and we re gonna go to the youngstown area. and what do we see here? this is a very interesting race, right? we see the republican. he has won their 55% to about 45% for the democratic candidate. but what s the key thing that s going on? yeah, this is a very republican district. trump won this district by 28 points. and of course this margin right here is a little founding director of the center for public theology and public policy at the yale divinity school. he is also a spokesperson for the poor people s campaign. reverend barber, thank you for joining us tonight. thank you so much for having me in this book. you focus on the depiction of poverty in this country. how we talk about poverty, how we show poverty, and you say that black people on the edge of poverty, they re called pour, while white people in the same low-income situation are called working class and getting rid of those stereotypes you argue would help people of all colors, all colors, and races. how would you say that? that would actually happen well, first of all, what we hope to do in this book, and i hope to do is to take to america. the way we measure poverty in government official power measurement is, is a lie, it s distortion, it does not count all of the poor. i want to see america deal with all of her pool. we re talking about 135 million people were talking about 41% of adults and over 50% of our children and the fact that the matter is they re 26 million for low wage black people 60 some of black population. but there s 30% of white poor people. and that s over 66 million when you, when you, when you frame it as being poor people or black, other-focused but working what you re doing is dismissing millions of poor and low weight white people. and it has been down through history, a form of mythology designed to keep black and white people from working together who really are allies and unified when it comes to the experience of poverty in this country. reverend barber, i want to ask you about something that i m sure you ve seen. this is representative byron donalds. he s been making some pretty stunning claims about black people during the time of jim crow and even just today, he doubled down on it when it comes to the social welfare programs and he says are hurting black people in particular they don t want to acknowledge that jim crow was, was, was an era ushered in by democrat politicians and a south who still wanted to segregate and subjugate black people in this country. and they also don t want to acknowledge that is lyndon johnson s great society also heavy democrat policy? that actually lead to fathers not being at home i wonder what your responses to that well, he s doubling down on ignorance. first of all, democrats of that day were not the democrats are today have today, and republicans of that de, well-linked republics, they re not, we re not kind of trump and other republicans today. so let s give it back, but more so what he s dismissing its the same mythology to suggest that the war on poverty was just about black people went. in fact, the war on poverty cut poverty in a major way. and most of the measures in terms of raw numbers help white people, particularly white people in the south the king said in 1965 to the greatest feat of racist oligarch or the puppets like this young man is the fear of a mass number of four and poor white folk coming together, reframing the voting electric in order to change the economic architecture of the country right now in this country, 295,000 poor low-wage people that every year, 800 a day that we cannot dismiss, that, we cannot say that is all right. the fact that we can have presidential election after presidential election debate, after debate, and not even talk about 135 million poor low-wage people who by the way, makeup 30% of the electorate and non battleground states and over 40% in so-called battleground state. poverty is an american crisis. i m arguing in this book, let s talk about all the poor, how it is contrary to our fundamentals about democracy, like establishing justice and promoting the general welfare. let s in the wealthiest country in the world. yeah, you know, the idea of building a coalition based on class as opposed to race, has been around for a long time. i mean, going back to reverend jackson s rainbow coalition famously tried to do that, but one of the interesting things about this era is that you see this unique dynamic happening in the election where the white christian right has really we attach itself to donald trump, and that has been the frame by which they look at american politics. i want you to listen to what congresswoman marjorie taylor greene said just a couple of days ago in las vegas the democrats in the fake news media want to constantly talk about, oh, president trump as a convicted felon. what you want to know, something the man that i worship is also a convicted felon as a as a pastor, as someone who is a student of history, what do you make of this worship of the former president among the evangelical christian right? most mostly hey, the white christian right. well, first of all, i don t call it christian is religious nationalism. that s the first day because you wouldn t be applying white is the operative word. secondly, you can t talk about christianity and not be concerned about the poor. the first sermon that jesus preached, he said, you must preach good news to the poor and, jesus was crucified for standing with the pool. he was crucified for lifting those who are on the margin. that is not in any way comparison to what trump is doing, but more importantly the most of those folks that she s talking about are not the poor, are poor, and low wasteful. this is a moment in history that we say, we can no longer allow an american crisis to be marginalized or treated like an anomaly and that s what this book is about. it s about
