Windy, chilly Friday in store for the capital

The work week will end with cold and windy conditions.
The temperature Friday morning is minus 15 C, but with wind chill feeling like minus 26 C. Environment Canada is also forecasting drifting snow at the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport.
Clouds will roll in during the day, flurries this afternoon, wind gusting to 50 km/hr. The high will be minus 9 but with wind chill feeling like minus 23.
Tonight, the temperature will hold around minus 12, with snow tapering off.
Snow is in the forecast for Saturday, high minus 8.
Sunday will be sunny with a high of minus 5.
Warmer temperatures expected next week, sunny and a high of minus 5. ....

Ottawa Public Health investigating 73 cases involving COVID-19 variants of concern

Ottawa s medical officer of health is reporting a significant increase in the number of Ottawa residents testing positive for a COVID-19 variant of concern.
Dr. Vera Etches says while 70 per cent of COVID-19 variants of concern cases are linked to travel or a household contract, there are indications that 30 per cent of the suspected cases of COVID-19 variants of concern are linked to community spread.
There are currently 10 confirmed cases of COVID-19 variants in Ottawa. Public Health Ontario reports eight cases in Ottawa of the variant first identified in the United Kingdom and one case of the variant first found in South Africa. ....

TSB concludes fatal Kingston plane crash highlights risk of flying at night with inadequate visual references

The Transportation Safety Board concludes a pilot flying at night with limited experience did not recognize the hazards associated with night visual flight rules into poor weather conditions on the day of a fatal plane crash near Kingston.
The pilot and six passengers were killed when a Piper PA-32-260 crashed north of the Kingston Airport on Nov. 27, 2019.
In its final report, the TSB says the fatal crash highlights the risk of night flying with inadequate visual references to the surface, particularly when weather conditions are poor and over areas with little lighting.
A privately registered U.S. Piper aircraft was flying from Toronto s Buttonville Municipal Airport to Neuville Airport in Quebec with a pilot and six passengers onboard.  ....

Ottawa inches closer to 'red-control' threshold with 80 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday

Ottawa Public Health is reporting 80 new cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa on Thursday, the largest one-day increase in new cases in more than a week.
One new death linked to the virus was also reported.
Since the first case of COVID-19 in Ottawa on March 11, 2020, there have been 14,950 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa, including 442 deaths.
The 80 new cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa on Thursday is the largest one-day spike in cases since Feb. 21, when 80 new cases were also reported.
On Wednesday, medical officer of health Dr. Vera Etches warned Ottawa s COVID-19 rates were inching closer to the red-control threshold, which would impose new restrictions on social gatherings, restaurants, bars and gyms. ....
