On Friday afternoon, a car hurtled across the Capitol grounds and rammed into two Capitol police officers. The attack left one officer dead and another injured. The crash and shooting took place near a security checkpoint frequently used by senators and staff, however most lawmakers had already left to return home for the holiday weekend. According to acting Capitol Police chief Yogananda D. Pittman, after crashing, the driver exited his car and lunged at other officers with a knife.
