New Owners Promise Continued Public Access To NW Montana Timberlands

New Owners Promise Continued Public Access To NW Montana Timberlands
The owner of a large block of private timberland in northwest Montana says it’s likely done its last major land sale after a deal announced this week. Southern Pine Plantations sold 125,000 acres of timberland west of Kalispell.
The land was sold to a Texas family, owners of Goosehead Insurance. Mark Jones is the company’s chairman and CEO. He says the family will work to maintain public access to the land through Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks block management program.
We want to be a good neighbor, but we want to make sure that people understand that we also expect people to be good neighbors to us. ....

Minister of the Environment Tõnis Mölder (Center) finds that Estonia’s new forestry development plan could get a framework in the coming months.
Mr. Mölder, why did you accept the portfolio in a situation where it was clear things could get ugly?
It was not an easy decision to make and I took a fair bit of time to think it over. I realize there are a lot of fires in the administrative area that need to be put out. Looking at the coalition agreement, the area is among the most ambitious. EU subsidies will allow us to really get something done in this field in the coming years. ....

Sen. Baldwin Urges USDA to Make COVID Relief Funds Available to Timber Industry

The Timber Industry across the US has taken a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Loggers are getting paid less for their hauls. Papermills reduced their output or shut down completely.
Verso Mill in Wisconsin Rapids was as one of them.
As WXPR previously reported, the mill used 1.5 million tons of wood each year. That’s about 25% percent of total production in Wisconsin.
The American Loggers Council estimates the reduction across the US caused a 13% loss in value of logger-delivered wood.
While many other industries that lost revenue due to the pandemic got relief from the CARES ACT, US Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) says loggers and others in the timber industry were largely left out. ....
