The plan includes eliminating outdated cesspools and septic systems that researchers say are the primary source of excess nutrients that have led to “fouled local bays, contributing to harmful algae blooms, beach closures and fish kills,” according to a press release from Suffolk County. With funding from federal, state and county sources, the region is expected to see completed sewer projects throughout south shore river corridors. The initiative also includes additional funding for a Suffolk program that gives grants to homeowners choosing to upgrade to new nitrogen-reducing septic systems.
