On Feb. 13, Longboat Key Turtle Watch set up shop in front of another shop — J. McLaughlin in the Bay Isles Shoppes. The store was hosting one of its Sip and Shop events, and representatives from the LBKTW set up a table to educate the public on the ins and outs of turtle season. The day started out rainy and unwelcoming, but as the sun dried out the island, more shoppers strolled by. Representatives Karey Kaine and Sam DiGiammarino stood by the several educational displays, ready to swap turtle stories and teach about how to best take care of the tiny turtles.
Jan. 23 dawned foggy and damp, but groups of volunteers with the Longboat Key Turtle Watch still searched for trash along the island's beaches as part of their monthly cleanups. Because the cleanups are organized through Keep Manatee Beautiful, small groups met up at different locations in Manatee County and spread out across the beach from tide line to vegetation line. Trash often gets caught in the seaweed near the water as the tide goes in and out, but on Saturday, there wasn't much to be found compared to other cleanups. Bridgette Clark and daughter Giana usually walk down at the tide line and Giana went about a quarter mile without finding any trash at all.
The Longboat Key Turtle Watch dispersed on the island's beaches on Dec. 12, reusable bags and grabbers in hand, as they picked up trash for their monthly beach cleanup event. The organization does a cleanup every month, organized by Keep Manatee Beautiful. Volunteers are divided into the zones turtle watchers patrol during the season, don their masks and fan out along the sand to pick up refuse left behind and washed ashore. On Dec. 12, it was a warm and sunny winter day, making conditions perfect for a morning walk. Several groups found sea turtle eggs that had been washed out of the few remaining nests on the beach when Tropical Storm Eta hit. One group found an abandoned, sea-worn chair on the sand and Ann Quackenbush found three shoes -- none of them matching.
3 months ago Share The town commission could have the first reading of a proposed ordinance as soon as Feb. 1, 2021. The town of Longboat Key held a virtual workshop Thursday morning to discuss proposed changes to its sea turtle protection requirements. Planning, Zoning and Building Director Allen Parsons led the meeting from the chambers inside Town Hall using Zoom. The meeting had as many as 26 people participate virtually. Parsons’ presentation Thursday morning was similar to the one he had delivered Nov. 9 before the town commission. He said the town has worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, Sea Turtle Conservancy and Longboat Key Turtle Watch on the proposed recommendations.
