At the annual general meeting (AGM) of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) on Wednesday, shareholders made the usual request to the top management for bonus shares. But this time, the setting was different. The man at the helm, outgoing group chairman AM Naik, 82, was heard assuring shareholders that he would join the chorus soon. There were laughs and chuckles at Naik's playful remark as he addressed the last AGM, nearly six decades after he joined L&T as a junior engineer and some 25 years at the top.

AM Naik, chairman of Indian conglomerate L&T, has revealed the key to his enduring success has been reinventing himself every three years. Naik, who is now 81, explained that throughout his career, he has consistently adapted his approach to suit the ever-changing demands of business. This dedication saw Naik work long hours for over 20 years, despite missing the last bus home on several occasions. While Naik is retiring from his role as chairman on 30 September, he will continue to oversee the L&T Employees' Trust.

A M Naik has chaired the annual general meeting for the last time as the head of the Larsen & Toubro (L&T) group, as he prepares to become chairman emeritus on September 30th. Since he joined as a junior engineer in 1965, L&Ts revenue has grown from Rs 5000 crore to Rs 1.83 lakh crore on a like-to-like basis, while its share price has risen 15,000% and its market capitalisation 20 times.
