An Island’s Path to 100% Renewables In this special podcast from Wärtsilä, we look at how the island of Graciosa transformed its grid. GTM Creative Strategies April 20, 2021 An Island’s Path to 100% Renewables Photo Credit: Wärtsilä The grid of the future lies 850 miles off the coast of Portugal, on an island in the Azores called Graciosa. The island has always been dependent on fossil fuels. But in 2018, that changed. That’s when a group of developers kicked off a hybrid wind-solar-battery storage power plant to slash diesel consumption. The plant consists of 1 megawatt of solar, 4.5 megawatts of wind, and a 6 megawatt/3.2 megawatt-hour energy storage system.

With more generation sources coming online, the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning is growing in importance. The increased digitization of the power generation industry means that artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are becoming synonymous with power generation. AI brings great potential to the future design of energy systems across several applications, including smart grids, electricity trading, efficiency, and the networking of power consumers and generators (Figure 1).

Op-Ed By Luke Witmer General Manager, Data Science, Wärtsilä Energy Storage and Optimization Since B2Gold first acquired the Fekola gold mine, located in a remote corner of southwest Mali, exploration studies revealed the deposits to be almost double the initial estimates. A recent site expansion has just been completed, and while the existing power units provide enough power to support the increase in production, the company sought to reduce its energy costs, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and increase power reliability. The addition of a 35MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) plant and 17MW/15MWh of energy storage to the existing 64MW thermal engine plant was decided. This new energy mix is anticipated to save over 13 million litres of fuel, reduce carbon emissions by thirty-nine thousand tons per year, and generate a payback in just over four years.
