i m ali velshi, one of irene s last stops dealt one of its hardest blows. parts of vermont completely unreachable as rivers start to roar. one official describing the aftermath as awful. cut off in carolina. i m carol costello. thousands who ignored evacuation orders stranded on the outer banks. emergency supplies heading there by ferry today on this american morning. good morning. it is monday, august 29th. you lose track of it on these type of weekends when so much happens. there is a lot going on for a lot of people who say we missed we dodged the bull letsz, a lot of people who didn t dodge any bullets. whoever says that is not listening to the chainsaws humming in connecticut, vermont, new jersey, all the way up and down the northeast coast. i think people thought it would be worse. we re lucky we dodged the bullet. i expected so much worse. nobody in western jersey dodged the bullet when you look at the towns and water still raging. everyone is clear ....
Aaa is saying the national average $3.96 a gallon. little more relief might be coming in the next few days because oil last week took a big hit. and so the lundberg oil survey this morning argued that gas prices may have peaked and we could see a 10 to 20% decline. so $3.96 the average now. i know you also have some more numbers that show exactly how much people are paying for gas every month. how much is it? the average household, they re spending $368 on gas every month. that s from the oil price information survey done exclusively for cnnmoney.com. $368, that s double what we were spending two years ago when gas prices were in the range of $2 a gallon. well, 368 bucks, you could buy two ipod nanos or a plane ticket from new york to l.a. ....
34th straight day of these climbing prices. . and over the course of that streak, carol, gas has been soaring by nearly 32 cents a gallon. a separate survey by lundberg has chicago drivers paying the most in the continental u.s. at $4.27 a gallon. and if you re a driver in tucson, you re paying just, just $3.54 a gallon. ouch. carol? what a bargain. yeah, right. so some economists are coming out this morning and saying, oh, gas prices have peaked and they re going to start to go down. what are you hearing? i ll tell you this. the price is just shy is just 25 cents shy of the all-time high of $4.11 per gallon. that s what we hit back in july of 2008. and we are hearing some rumbling that $5 a gallon is a good possibility. but listen to this. the analyst that compiles the lundberg survey is a bit more optimistic, she says prices may be at their peak right now, ....
Again. the good news is oil prices are down about 63 cents. don t start celebrating because they re still above $112 a barrel. what s that translate to at the pump? pretty high prices. if you take a look at the sticker shock coming in. aaa says $3.76 for the average price of gasoline across the country. also if you look at lundberg saying, $3.77. that s up 19 cents over the last three weeks and 99 cents from a year ago. people are starting to feel this. companies are starting to feel this, too, airlines starting to raise price are for the tenth time. last week, us airways moved trying to raise fares about $10 on domestic routes. if one does it, the others will follow. delta, america and continental raising their prices as well. in the ten times they ve tried to do it in the past year, six times it was successful. ....
With the dow slowly clawing its way up to the 12,000 mark. right now, after 108-point gain yesterday, the dow opens this morning at 11,980. moving on. checking top stories right now. gas prices in the u.s. edged up. the past two weeks self-serve regular up three cents a gallon. national average is $3.11 according to the lundberg survey, that is the highest price since the financial meltdown of october 2008. anti-government protests under way today. the demonstrators want an end to government corruption and police brutality. organizers hope to capitalize on the change sparked in tutu. ....
