Iowa communities action plan for PFAS in drinking water.
The state tested 116 Iowa water systems for PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.”
The city is among at least three that have shut down wells that are contaminated by PFAS, which persist indefinitely in the environment.
Ames’ treated drinking water had much smaller amounts than the federal standard, according to DNR sampling in December.
One well that is contaminated with PFAS is located in a firefighter training area. Firefighting foam is a known source of PFAS.
