A Mackay takeaway shop has recorded its “busiest ever” Good Friday in 10 years – serving up more than 800 orders to the hungry masses.
Vella’s Fish Bar on Sydney Street sold 1480 pieces of fish, 465 kgs of chips, 760 potato scallops and 280 prawn cutlets on Friday as a line of hungry customers snaked out the door and down the street.
Owner Judith Fenech said staff were smashed with orders from 10.30am to 8pm.
The shop was so buzzing with customers and orders that it even blew a fuse.
“A fuse in a power pole blew about 7pm and we had to call Ergon,” Ms Fenech said.

At just 21 years old, Damien van dan Merwe has taken a leap of faith by opening the "unorthodox" Renegade Barber on the outskirts of Paget.
Mr van dan Merwe said he was passionate about providing "on point" cuts, a complete opposite from his early experiments in the profession.
"Five or six years ago, my mate wanted a haircut back home in South Africa," Mr van dan Merwe said.
"He went to a boarding school and they were pretty strict with their hair … but he desperately needed this haircut.
"I went, 'All right'; I sat him down on a little chair outside and I cut his hair.

Why coal mining businesses need to speak up on insurance

Dawson MP George Christensen has launched an inquiry into what he calls the hypocrisy of the big banks and insurance services.
He is calling for businesses in the resources sector who have fallen victim to "ethical" decisions from banks and insurance companies pulling back from the coal sector to come forward and tell their stories.
"What we're hearing out of the sector is that insurers are saying if you've got so much of your business in thermal coal mining, we don't want to insure you anymore," he said
"Why? These are lawful, law-abiding businesses and they are having these services withdrawn from them, pretty arbitrarily, simply because these financial service providers - banks and insurers - somehow think there's an ethical issue involved.

Cheap business loan program extended for those off JobKeeper

Cheap COVID-recovery loans with 24-month repayment holidays are on offer for Mackay and Whitsunday businesses that move off JobKeeper by March 28.
More than 350,000 current JobKeeper recipients Australia-wide are expected to be eligible under the expanded SME Loan Guarantee Scheme.
Loans will be available from April 1 and must be approved before December 31 this year.
The Morrison-McCormack Government will extend the scheme as part of its commitment to support up to $40 billion in lending to small and medium enterprises.
Under the existing scheme, the government says more than 35,000 loans worth more than $3 billion have already been provided to help businesses get to the other side of this pandemic.

Major works are under way on the 150-year-old Bowen Wharf and North Queensland businesses are leading the charge.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said almost $2.7 million worth of works would be carried out on the wharf over coming months.
He said that would include repairing and replacing the structure’s aged timber members repaired or replaced.
“One hundred per cent of the budget will be spent in North Queensland; with over half a million dollars to be injected into the Whitsunday region alone,” Mr Bailey said.
“The Whitsunday region is a huge reason why Queensland is the place to be.

Fixed: Telstra identifies Mackay mobile outage cause

Telstra has revealed the cause of a widespread mobile outage in the Mackay region, which left some customers without service for more than three days.
Areas affected last week included Mackay, the Northern Beaches, Habana, parts of Hay Point, parts of the Pioneer Valley, Mount Martin, Mount Jukes, Cape Hillsborough and St Bees Island.
Telstra confirmed the outage to the
Daily Mercury on February 24, but services were not restored until 4am on February 28.
"The cause was a fault in some of the technology used to transmit mobile signals from our base stations, which was rectified," a Telstra spokesman said.
"We want to again thank our customers and residents for their patience while we deal with unplanned outages that affect their service."

Mackay business wins demolition contract at port

“Local works by local business equals local jobs,” Mrs Gilbert said.
“And here we’ll see another six jobs supported in the Mackay region, adding to those 100 already created as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s recent $17 million investment in the port.
“We’re building a new $8.5 million tug berth facility, delivering major road upgrades including the $120 million Mackay Northern Access upgrade and these works to be carried out by Razor are vital to supporting our industries and more jobs.
“Safety is the priority, and with it being unused for a number of years and a recent inspection identifying it was no longer safe, the port has engaged a local business to carry out these necessary works.”
