Labour goes after ‘ordinary people’ April 19, 2021 NEWS ANALYSIS: Members of Norway’s long-troubled Labour Party tried hard to come together during their annual national meeting that extended into the weekend. Reaction was mixed on whether they succeeded: Any return to power in the upcoming election may be based more on the strength of potential government partners than themselves. Labour Party leader Johan Gahr Støre prevailed on several key issues during Labour’s annual and digitally held meeting. Now he’ll be battling for the prime minister’s office after national elections in September. PHOTO: Arbeiderpartiet Labour’s core problems are tied mostly to lots of internal conflict in recent years. The party’s oil and transport industry supporters for example, are constantly at odds with the party’s climate activists who want to cut emissions. Labour also faces sheer demographic challenges: Norwegian labourers who once voted for Labour have largely been replaced by lower-paid foreign workers who don’t vote in Norway. The working class that earlier backed Labour has declined as the country’s affluence has risen.
Norway closing to most non-residents January 27, 2021 The Norwegian government closed the country’s borders from midnight Thursday to nearly everyone who doesn’t live in the country. The goal is to ward off imported Corona virus infection, especially the new British strain that’s out of control over much of Europe. The military and police have been cooperating on border patrol duties like here at a crossing to Finland in Northern Norway. Finland already closed its borders to Norway earlier this week. PHOTO: Forsvaret/Joakim Salmelid “In practice this means that the borders will be closed to all who don’t live in Norway,” Prime Minister Erna Solberg said at a press conference Wednesday evening. The closure will be in force for at least the next two weeks, at which point her government will re-evaluate whether they’ll need to renew what she called “the strictest entry requirements since the Corona crisis began” last March.
