Maratha reservation: Uddhav Thackeray, Ajit Pawar, Ashok Chavan, Dilip Walse Patil and Balasaheb Thorat to meet governor today

Days after the Supreme Court struck down the Maratha reservation, Maharashtra Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray along with few other leaders from the MVA allies is set to meet governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari today to discuss the issue.
Thackeray will be accompanied by deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, Maratha reservation cabinet sub-committee head Ashok Chavan, home minister Dilip Walse Patil and revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat.
The delegation will meet the governor at 5 pm at Raj Bhavan. The CM-led delegation will submit a memorandum to the governor urging him to submit it to the president of India.
On May 9, the committee had decided that the state government will soon write letters to the Prime Minister and President of India to draw their attention to the issue and seek their intervention for the restoration of the quota for the 32% Maratha community in the state. ....

The Supreme Court on Wednesday (5 May) struck down the Maharashtra State Reservation for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act, 2018 which extends reservation to the Maratha community in public education and employment.
A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan pronounced the verdict, which was reserved on 26 March. The Constitution bench had commenced the arguments in the matter on 15 March.
The Apex Court held that there were no extraordinary circumstances justifying the grant of reservation to Marathas in excess of 50 per cent ceiling limit. ....

New Delhi [India], May 5 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down the reservation in government jobs and educational institutions for the Maratha community brought in by the Maharashtra government in 2018, saying it exceeded the 50 per cent cap imposed earlier.
A five-judge Constitution Bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan, L Nageswara Rao, S Abdul Nazeer, Hemant Gupta and Ravindra Bhat in its judgment said that that people from the Maratha community cannot be declared as educationally and socially backward community to bring them within the reserved category. ....
