Debswana Diamond Company a joint venture between Botswana government and Anglo American’s De Beers is going into full swing to ensure that their new business strategy adopted last year is yielding desired results.
The Debswana Executive Management recently took the media through their strategy and how they have started to implement it. The strategy is anchored in restructuring of mines and improving efficiencies throughout the group’s operations.
First to take the cue was the General Manager for Jwaneng Diamond Mine Koolatotse Koolatotse who briefed the media about the transition of the Cut 9 expansion project from Majwe Mining Joint Venture (MMJV) to Debswana Diamond Company.  Koolatotse revealed that the transition was successfully completed at the beginning of April and that the Cut 9 contract was a P12 billion waste stripping project that he said started in 2019 and was expected to end in 2027.

Debswana Mining Company, owned by De Beers and the Botswana government, said on Tuesday it has terminated a $1.3 billion contract with a unit of Australia's Thiess to extend the lifespan of its Jwaneng diamond mine and will carry out the project in-house.
Debswana, among the world’s largest diamond producers, declined to provide a reason for terminating the contract for the extension project, known as Cut 9, which was awarded to Majwe Mining in 2019.

Majwe and mine workers union dispute reaches court

WHERE'S THE PACKAGE: Tsimako
Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU) has taken Majwe Mining to Industrial Court after the latter backtracked on an earlier agreement between the two parties regarding the separation package of the workers.
In January, Debswana announced the termination of the Majwe Mining contract which was worth over P15 billion.
This raised concerns over the future of Majwe employees as their contracts were supposed to run for the next seven years.
In a meeting with the Majwe management, the Union had proposed to include a separation package for the workers in a bid to cushion them against financial commitments they have made.

Olga Ditsie, the country's only female Mayor ⋆ TheVoiceBW

A female diamond in the Political rough
The First Lady of Jwaneng, an ardent advocate for female representation in politics, the fearless leader is an inspiration to many women looking to succeed in the rough and tumble cutthroat world.
The 48-year-old’s political journey actually started on a sour note, when she lost primary elections at council level back in 2004.
It was a setback that caused the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) member to fall out of love with politics for a while, and she quit ‘the game’ to focus on her business.
After almost a decade away, Ditsie returned to active politics as the BDP Branch Secretary for the Jwaneng/Mabutsane constituency.

JOB LOSSES: Majwe Mining Joint Venture sees job cuts
Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU) says the decision by Debswana to cut ties with Majwe Mining should not result in any job losses, especially now under the State on Public Emergency, which prohibits retrenchments.
This week, Debswana announced that it has decided to terminate the Majwe Mining Cut 9 contract effective January. 04th, this year.
However, Majwe Mining has been given a three-month notice starting on the day of the termination of the contract.
Reasons for the termination of the multi-billion Pula contract were not provided save for Debswana to say it would now carry the Cut 9 project in-house.
